Ive never posted before so i thought id say hey.

Hey everyone, my name is josh, im from South Carolina, and im 20 years old. I just finished my Associate Degree in Science, i am transferring to USC for a Bachelor's (or more) in Applied Biology so i can work more closely with the animals i have come to love. Snakes of course, i currently own 3 snakes, but i plan on getting more this summer. 0.0.1 Carpet Python, 0.1 Brazilian Rainbow Boa, and 1.0 Copperhead. In the past ive had a Red Tail Boa but he died of natural causes at 16 years old. I just wanted to say hey and tell everyone a little about myself. Here is a picture of my Carpet Python, i can post pictures of my other two when i get on my computer at home if anyone is interested in seeing them. Hopefully this works.

Welcome to the site! Even though you have been here stalking around Nice long snake you got there! Seems like he is a handful. I hope to see your other snakies as well. Also you are brave brave if you have that Copperhead or getting one eventually. I would just be terrified.

hahaha stalking, i clicked on alot of people's profile to see what the majority of people's on here's favorite snake is. Its pretty diverse but Corns seem to be the favorite and alot of people like Carpets which is really cool. As for the Copperhead, i had some-one with experience come in home and teach/do it for me hahah anything involved in hooking him for cleaning until i got use to the process. He never comes out other than that cause he eats in his cage. I want to move up to working with more aggressive hots but im not sure the copperhead was great training he very seldom strikes.

there is no such thing as hot 'training.' just because he never strikes, that doesn't mean he can't kill you dead..... on the spot. having some guy come to your house and show you want to do is not nearly enough experience to own a hot. sorry, but what you are doing is very dangerous. i hope you don't get bit and die.

Thanks for your concern but in my past ive been around people on a daily basis more aggressive/cunning/deadly then this snake. As im guessing you know based on your name the Southern Copperheads venom is relatively mild and for almost all bites in healthy adults no anti-venom is even administered. And coming from a man from Hindu background from India who dealt with much more deadly snakes on a daily basis in his village and continues to here in America, i trust his judgement and even if i didnt its not enough to deter me from keeping a Copperhead. If people didnt take chances and keep these snakes we wouldn't know a thing about them today. Not going to say, i dont respect the snake because i do, but fear this particular one? no i dont... Now a Mamba? thats a whole different story, i couldn't own one, and respect anyone that does. Thank you again but i am more concerned with getting in a car wreck and dieing then i am, suffering a deadly bite from this snake.

horrible justification.

.22 caliber bullets are smaller than .45. does that make then less lethal???

i'll go ahead and correct you here. your statement is false. SOME copperhead bites are not treated with antivenin, but you are incorrect in stating 'almost all' are not. this still does not detract from the fact that copperhead bites can be fatal, you will endure days, weeks and sometimes months of extreme pain, rehabilitation and possible permanent tissue and muscle damage. do you think your hospital bill will be less because it was a copperhead bite? no, it won't be. and just because SOME people have survived copperhead bites without the need for antivenin, that doesn't mean they make good pets. nor does it mean they are ok for inexperienced hot owners to own.

this was the funniest and scariest sentence of your entire post. the fact that you feel you HAVE TO own a copperhead is the very reason why you shouldn't have one.

and what type of official, scientific studies are you performing on this particular specimen?

So just curious sickvenom so you are saying ther is no such thing as training with a mentor on the proper handling techniques of hots how would you recommend going about learning or did you think he was saying he was trying to train his snake

This information is readily available, i dont have one specific source other than my mother who is a RN at a local hospital in heavy Copperhead territory and they are the most common bites seen in this region. She has told me numerous times that it in most cases is more dangerous to administer anti-venom due to the risk of allergenic response and only an antibiotic is given to reduce the risk of secondary infection. Now elderly and children will receive anti-venom regardless. I just googled "copperhead bite treatment" and one of the first headlines to come up was: Copperhead Care Sheet

Feb 12, 2007 ... In most instances of Copperhead bite, no antivenin is administered; instead, the patient is given pain medication and supportive care. Copperhead Care Sheet

and then:

Hiker's Notebook: Copperhead

The copperhead bite is not serious and requires only minor medical treatment. This is because the venom of the copperhead is not as toxic as that of other ... Hiker's Notebook: Copperhead

But i looked around and other websites say different.. The basis of my statement was on first hand accounts from my mother, that's what i believe, regardless id still go to the hospital if bitten hahah.

i WOULDN'T recommend anyone learn how to 'handle' hots. there's no need for it.

Yea really? if you think for one second i give a **** that you think i should/can own a copperhead then your sadly mistaken. I say you should get rid of you venomous snakes? cause you obviously think you know more about thes animals then the next person. **** that noise take that somewhere else cause im not trying to hear it. And me saying ive been around people more dangerous than that snake is justification whether you like it or not.
