Just kidding. I believe it's an Eastern Hognose.

That's what somebody else said but his nose isn't turned up at all and he's pretty long and slim? You're probably right anyway!

Either that or a water snake. The bands threw me off. I'm used to the more northern variety.

Google agrees with this. Go with this. Completely harmless and not deserving of death. Shame your friend.

Better than 9 hours on your feet in freezing rain/sleet/snow watching cars go around in circles! (Ok, I at least had SOME fun...)

Re: Snake ID North East TX?

I spent 4 hours in the woods in the Texas heat looking for ANY snake lol...always seems as if those who don't want to, find them and those who do, don't.

Nice call FWK! I was thinking water snake also. Those brown short stripes on the upper jaw is kind of characteristic. I was having second thoughts that it might be a water moccasin.

Kind of funny... I looked for about 45 min, also in the woods in Texas and found three!
Two blotched water snakes, one juvenile one adult
One rough green snake

Exactly. I don't know how many times I've gone herping only to get home and see the animal I was looking for dead on facebook. But at least if the snake gets posted I've got a chance to educate someone, maybe next time they wont kill first and ask questions later. I don't like seeing pictures of dead snakes, but I'd rather see them than not see them. If that makes any sense lol.

I was out once and the only thing I found was a small garter snake and a tiny skink. As we were walking back to our car a jogger came by and showed us a picture on his phone of two bull snakes mating that he had taken on the trail about three miles away from us...

Re: Snake ID North East TX?

Maybe I should go out with the mindset of hating snakes and that "the only good snake is a dead snake" and they will all just come out for me haha!
