Thermostat placement with UTH's.

Where do you place the thermostat? Directly on the uth, or on the substrate inside the enclosure? If you put it on the substrate then wouldn't the glass/plastic be prone to getting too hot?

I put mine on the uth spot all mine are under the wooden viv.

Between the UTH and the bottom of the enclosure. Set the stat to the temperature that achieves the desired hot spot temperature measured inside the enclosure.

Yes, I agree with what has been said. Putting the probe over the uth is best for making sure that it never gets hot enough to injure your animal. However, you have to do some trial and error to figure out what temperature to set your thermostat to in order to achieve the desired ambiant temperature. This will take some fiddling. If you just set the thermostat to the temperature you desire, it will not get hot enough to maintain the proper ambiant temperature.

I put mine on top of the glass inside the terrarium in the center of the uth. This way it will tell me how hot it underneath the substrate so if the snake wants to burrow he will not get burned

It's better to regulate the UTH directly by placing the probe on it. If the snake happens to lay on top of the probe, you may get false readings and elevated temps. Always measure your actual hot spot temperature with a heat gun and adjust the thermostat accordingly.

Anybody who says that the snake laying on the hot spot is going to give your t-stat probe in the enclosure a false reading ever measured it? I did, 3 degree difference between what the probe read and what the area around the snake was at. If your ambient is correct the snake's temp won't alter the reading in any way that will cause damage if your using even the most basic of thermostats. Just make sure the probe is secured properly so the snake doesn't move it.

Well if you say a snake gives false readings then how is your method any better? If I put it outside his tank then how do I know that I'd the right temperature inside the tank. My way works perfectly fine

Its called a heat gun. You should always double check your temps with one regardless of where you mount the probe. Regardless, I'm not going to argue since I'm just a 20 year "newbie" to snake keeping lol.

Is that why you use a heat gun to measure your temps?

You guys do realize that putting the probe between the glass and the heat pad, between the substrate and the glass or on top of the substrate will all give you the same reading and the same risk for your snake being burned right?

I guess I'm just all about having the least amount of wires, tape, glue, and other crap as possible inside of my cages lol. To each their own though!!
