Well, that's one way to determine gender!

I bought my first corn snake, Tavi, in Sept '08 from Petco (I know!) and because of that, never knew its gender. Had been thinking that Tavi was a male because s/he had gone off feed for the last 56 days. Thought that was male breeding season related. But today when I went to get her out to see if she wanted to eat, I lifted the water bowl off her and this was what I found.

She has never been near another snake, without a cage between them anyway, since I got her.

Re: Well, that's one way to determine gender!

I'm not an expert, and am not even remotely experienced, but a couple of those look healthier than your average slug.

I've found a couple of shreds of information suggesting possible parthenogenesis (asexual reproduction--some reptiles have been caught doing it) for colubrids, including corn snakes...if you have the resources I might try incubating the healthy-looking eggs and seeing how it bears out! Good luck, with whatever you decide!

I don't know about parthogenesis in colubrids or anything, haven't researched it. But if I had an incubator lying around, I'd be tempted to throw in some slugs. Would be very interesting to say the least if you managed to hatch out a baby corn....could spark a whole new field of research :P

Re: Well, that's one way to determine gender!

Yeah, because three of them looked semi good to me and also a numbe of other corn snake breeders on another forum I belong to, I did go ahead and put them in a makeshift incubator, unfortunately I was not expecting to have any eggs this year, so was a bit underprepared to try to incubate anything but it should work, if they are actually viable. I don't expect anything out of them but from the bit of searching I did today, seems like there have been enough incidences that *might* have been parthenogenesis, even though it's not anywhere close to proven, to warrant seeing if these go anywhere.

Wow what a surprise! Hopefully you can get some healthy babies out of some of those better looking eggs. Keep us updated
