I am a cabinetmaker by trade and I can tell you that melamine isn't the best for moisture. It will not last, lining the inside with plastic laminate would be far better. Another option is to line the inside with 1/8 plexiglass, seal all joints with silicone and you will have a enclosure that is safe for your snake and will last a long time. If I can help you in any way just let me know. I no longer build my own enclosures, it is far cheaper just to buy one of the quality pvc cages that are available today. They are also far better to control heat and humidity. You will probably need a RHP verses a UTH if you are using 3/4" plywood. The UTH will be mostly blocked by the thickness, although if you use the 1/8 plexi you can sandwich the heat tape under it. Some will say this is a fire hazard, but I have had enclosures built in this manner for years with no issues, as a matter of fact they are still being used by friends today. If you were worried about it you can easily provide a air gap between the two to avoid any issues, but as I said I have used it for years with zero issues.
I have seen enclosures made out of the strangest materials, lol!!!! A friend of mine built a enclosure out of 3/4 MDF and he painted the interior with the stuff you use on basement walls to waterproof the interior. Didn't look the greatest, at least for my tastes, but he hasn't had any issues with moisture damage, and MDF will soak up any moisture like a sponge!!!
