Hey there. This here is a thread for all my fellow amateur and or professional field entemologists. Here you can post pics of and discuss your latest and most memorable finds, tips and tricks, spots, etc. You can also use it if you must to identify an unfamiliar species, etc. Have fun!

My DH's ex is an entomologist, so I asked him, because he learned a lot from her.

That's a male dobsonfly.

Looks like the males aren't dangerous, as cool as hell though. Found a mantid a few minutes later then rolled my ankle lol, had to rock climb for 20 minutes to get to the car =/

Looks like you read that article more closely than I did! I missed the part about the dobsonfly being unable to harm humans because of poor leverage the first time.

My excuse is that a four-year-old granddaughter was trying to help me . . .

I love mantids; they are such awesome critters to watch!!

Nice looking catch! I was at the National Museum of the Marine Corps down in Quantico back in August, I found one of those the length of a mens size 13 shoe. I was at a hotel, and I will always regret not having brought my kill jar. Thanks for the I.D. I couldn't find that. All Bing brought up were beetles. I love mantids, too. I keep those during the summer. I haven't had any for a while, my supplier got mites. I am thinking about catching some, maybe getting myself an ooth. I went out today for a little bit, got some centipedes, milipedes, some cool spiders, some worm or maggot, and some strange green hornet-like insects. I think they may be ants of some kind. I will try to get some pictures (I used my kill jar, gonna preserve them) but I will try to take some pictures tomorrow. My camera isn't too good for close-ups, but I think I might use my microscope. Give you guys some awesome details. Thanks for the article, too. Very interesting.

I used to have a wall mounted frame with almost 100 green tiger beetles in it. took me years to build it up using only specimen I collected that were already dead. Love those guys.
