Need help on new viv.

Yea , i was wondering if anyone can help me , only the viv i have now , that homes my CP , really really smells . My snake has lived in it for 15 years , and in that time , it has been varnished many times , but when i clean it , after he has done his poo n stuff , the box smells real bad for days . The last lot of varnish that was put on , was this stuff that drys in twenty min`s , not like the old varnish that takes days even weeks to dry , is this the cause of the smell .So i was wondering how any of you guys get on , with larger snakes, and there smelly poo`s , and has anyone got any advice, for when i get my new vivarum. Thanks , Tracy.

Re: Need help on new viv.

Clean it right away or look into bio-active substrate. Though it may still smell for a bit.

Re: Need help on new viv.

Did the viv get sanded down and really cleaned before new varnish was put on?

Just taking it down and doing a major clean, sanding and re-varnish could fix it. I wouldn't just go with a bio active or something that might mask the issue.

If anything bio-active substrate gives the reptile a cleaner environment. None of my enclosures stink.

Ya I agree, sounds like you have some saturation in the varnish and would need to remove it. After 15 years of wastes slopped on it, it's bound to happen.

Hi Kat , no not the last few times it was varnished , just washed it down first . I keep it super clean anyway , i bleach it out once a week , wheather he has done anything or not , and after i have cleaned it , it really does chuck up , the box almost blows you away some days when i open it. This is one of the reasons i am looking for a new vivarum , not sure if i will get the same problem again !!!
