Ambient Air Temperature Control?
Hi All,
unfortunatly Mr Rex scares my Girlfriend too much because of the sheer size of him so I have sold him to someone who's not scared of them and will put a lot more time into him. I unfortunatly cannot provide enough time with him because I'm at University sometimes from 7am to 7pm then I have to do work etc so it made sence for my partner to bond with Rex while I wasn't there but he's just too big for her.
So I'm keeping in good touch with my seller and he was curious about the 6 x 3 x 3ft vivarium I also sold him for Mr Rex. I never got round to seting up this vivarium as my plan was to coat it in yacht varnish first, so I'd image a bank of halogen flood lights around a foot off the basking area would be good. But what about keeping the ambient temperature throughout the vivarium of that size? Cermaic bulb attahced to a thermostat in the middle? or maybe more flood lights throughout? Also could you specify how far the bulb or bulbs should be from the substrate.
Thanks All

Re: Ambient Air Temperature Control?
I have found that just the basking lights keep the whole cage just right.

This, Along with insulation, you could probably heat it on Fluorescents
Sucks you had to get rid of him, Why though? She didn't need to interact with him.
The only time I "create a bond" with my albigs is when I feed them. That itself does wonders in the trust department.

Re: Ambient Air Temperature Control?
Mine has not been insulated yet so the heat escapes faster. I haven't had the time or money to insulate it. Though it is set up to be insulated.
I use a set of 3-6 45 Watt floods in groups of 3 mounted on the enclosure walls. This keeps the ambient temperature high. The fixture they are on allows for me to adjust the amount of power output so I can regulate the temperature easily.
I also used one set to create a secondary basking spot which is a little cooler than his primary one.

Re: Ambient Air Temperature Control?
I have a CHE/night bulb of some type on the warm side of the enclosure connected to a thermostat, but typically if the temps outside of the enclosure are acceptable no supplemental heat is necessary.

Re: Ambient Air Temperature Control?
Thanks for your reply infernalis, I honestly though the bank of halogen flood lights wouldn't make a difference concidering the size. And plus yours is insulated really good, so you have a much better chance of holding that heat in. But I'll pass all of this information on

Hi war machine; ill bare that in mind. And as for Mr Rex he was a hisser at 2ft so he had obviously not had much attention paid to him previously, with the continuous bond that me and my partner would have provided he would have come around but he was too scary for my partner. However Mr Rex had spent that much of his time on his own (I'd imagine anyway) that taming him and building trust would be accomplished with thorough bonding. I would have liked to keep Mr Rex but when I finish university and I have to do more work at home and I don't get to bond with him much, I feel as though I take one step forward and two steps back. This guy is spot on for Mr Rex though, he's enthusiastic and bonds with his Sav very well. He even let me see all of his reptiles and how well his savannah took to him. That's what Mr Rex needs, good consistent bonding. Not speaking and trying to engage with him every couple of days.
However I'm going to get a tiny baby Sav, that way I can happily go to uni and have the odd day where I have to study at home knowing my partner can bond with him/her.
Thanks for your input

Yes that's fairly true, however over here we do get fairly cold temperatures, and it would depend on whether or not they keep the heating on. I think it would be safer however to use a bulb and thermostat to ensure a consitant temperature is kept. I just wanted some advice on what exactly it is that should be used and so forth.
Thanks for your input mate

That's a good idea Disco Pat, and halogen flood lights are fairly cheap and you also picked up a good point about the insulation. That 6ft I sold is standard wood, no insulation as many vivariums from shops are built. Therefor I have to take that into concideratiom when people give me examples of their light set-ups.
Thanks for your input Disco Pat

Re: Ambient Air Temperature Control?
Hello, if you want to have an idea of an insolation build we are currently building one with it.
Temperatures inside seem to keep very nice. and with forced ventilation it should be superb.
I dont know the name of this type of insolation in english :S we thougth of using mineral wool, but it creates to much dust. and i was afraid it would be harmfull for the animals.
