Talking hey from california; picked up a boa

hey/ so i picked up a boa a (male hypo/hog boa possible%50 het for albino sunset. from 100% het x 100% het for Albino Sunset related breeding)

what does that 100% and 50% and het and all that mean? im a little confused. hes about 5 months old and feeding on frozen large mice once a week. this is my second snake but the first one i had was to little to understand. now im in 20's and got this little guy. hopefully i can get some good knowledge. thanks again chris.

im also feeding in a separate tank, iv seen a bunch of discussions and some say its not worth it but whats your opinions

Re: hey from california; picked up a boa

Welcome aboard.

First things first. From the information you gave us of the parents your boa should actually be 66% het albino.

The way hets work is if a visual recessive animal is bred to an animal that does not carry that same gene either visually or heterozygous ( hidden) then all of the babies are 100% heterozygous for that recessive gene because the visual parent passed his half of the genetic code to the offspring.

If you breed two 100% het animals together you will produce roughly 25% visuals, 25% normals and 50% hets. Unfortunately a heterozygous animal is not visually different than a normal so you will have about 75% of the offspring look like normals. Two out of every three normals is actually 100% heterozygous so all of the normals are labeled 66% possible het because you can't distinguish a normal from a het.

If you breed a normal to a 100% het half of the babies will carry the heterozygous gene so the babies are labeled 50% possible het.

Welcome to the asylum, nice snake.

Personally i feed all my snakes in their enclosure on the substrate and have had no issues at all.

Also how do you help with extra shed on the tail. Iv tried oncreasing humidity by misting and toping off the inclosure. My friend gave me some reptile spray for shedding. It just has watet and aloe vera n some other things. But I dont know if that helps

Welcome aboard! I don't feed in a separate cage, it is stressful on the snake, plus they go into a crazy feed response.. Dealing with even a medium sized snake is tricky when they're in feed mode.
