Question!

So I got my python yesterday and shes been hiding most of the time she's been in the cage. The temperatures are normal, the humidity is fine, is this normal for a snake to do?

Re: Question!

Yes, you need to give her some time to get used to her new house. Can you give a run down of what the temps and humidity are? Also what is she being housed in and what type of substrate? Pics would be great!

She's housed in a 40 gallon terrarium, temps are about 88 and 79 right now, humidity is around 43%, I don't know what type of substrate...

Re: Question!

Increase the 88 to 95, and get that humidity up to at least 60%.

Re: Question!

It is totally normal for a ball python to hide. They are secretive snakes by nature. Nothing to worry about there

The enclosure must have a heat gradient. One side of the enclosure (the one with the heat source) will be considered the hot side, and the other side will be considered the cool side. The hot side should be set to be 89-95F, and the cool side should be 77-82F.
Having good humidity levels is essential to proper ball python care. The humidity in the enclosure should never drop below 50%. Ideally, it should be between 55-60%, and up to 75-90% when your snake is getting ready to shed. You should have a digital hygrometer to read the humidity levels in your enclosure.
Substrate refers to what is on the "floor" of the enclosure. This may be aspen shavings, reptibark, newspaper, etc. What kind of "flooring" have you put inside the enclosure?

And of course, Congrats on your new snake!

Re: Question!

You got a ball python, if you see it other than feeding or cleaning time then THAT would be unusual

And i agree withthe others the temps and humidityy are too low

Re: Question!

If you could take a picture of the entire enclosure we can help you make sure things are RIGHT and the snake gets to live out the next thirty years happy and healthy

Did you want a snake for xmas or was it an impulse?

It was for Christmas! And my phone camera is broken
And do you have any suggestions for heating it? I have a heat lamp, should I just put a heating pad under it or a towel over it?

i say an UTH (under tank heater) on a thermostat. Amazon.com: Hydrofarm MTPRTC Digital Thermostat For Heat Mats: Patio, Lawn & Garden

that thermostat works awesome, i have 8 of them! use that on an UTH put underneath the glass on the warm side... just make sure the tank is not sitting directly on top of the uth, leave a gap for air flow.
