Adopted mistreated snake

So going thru the news paper I find an ad about a snake. Considering I had to give up my last when I lived with my mom. Seeing this and living on my own caught my interest. So I call and go and look at her. I noticed she had no water dish and the temp was in the hundreds. I also saw that her last shed was very incomplete. I immediately gave the money and took her with me. On the way out I ask when was the last time she was fed. He replies like 3 weeks ago. Now the good. She is tame no signs of aggression so far. Food is on the way and I hope to get a little weight on her ad she feel skinny for a snake of her size. Just joined the forum to get tips along the way. First snake was a king snake and I'm told this one is a red tail boa. I'm not sure what kind of red tail so I will upload pics ASAP to see if you can help Id her type. I'm thinking Central American red tail... Just a guess

That looks like a common BCI or more commonly known in the pet trade as a Colombian Red Tail. Can you tell us more about how you set it up?

Her new cage will be here tomorrow. Right now it's just some supplies at Walmart. And some old ones. I got a 50 gallon plastic tub and some old reptibark an big screen cover. Heat lamp water dish from the dog section. Keep in mind this is super temporary just cause her living conditions before we're a little more rough. In the mail coming tomorrow with rush delivery is (copy and pasted from receipt.) item numbers and prices removed, just list

You're gonna hear a lot of opinions about that heat rock but as long as you keep a close eye on it (and I mean check it everyday) it should be ok. Did you say the snake still has some stuck shed?

That's definitely your common BCI. I don't think you'll have many problems putting weight on her.

Had some stuck and it was it about 25 to 30 pieces in the previous cage. My king snake would shed it all one whole piece

Probably caused by a lack of humidity due to high temps. You should consider creating a humid hide for her.

thats what i was thinking. i was just planning on misting her cage. interested in the humid hide tho. where can i find one of those. i dont mind paying the price if it helps her.

just googled. i will see if i make one for her before work.

You can just make one. Get a plastic container with a lid i.e. tupperware, gladware (I used a plastic birthday cake box) cut a hole in it and put some damp spaghnum moss in there. I like to keep mine on the warm side but it doesn't really matter.

I've not kept a bci - but that enclosure you listed - that's an all screen, vertical enclosure (at least from what I googled) - is that going to be best? All screens are going to be very difficult to keep humidity up in, even with constant spraying.

Edit: See now it has option to be horizontal too. But still all screen is going to be an issue I think.

Oh yeah that's no good. You'd be better off keeping her in that tub.

thats a good point. i will try it and see how it works out. keeping an eye on the humidity and if i have a hard time with it i will swap out. thank you. i didnt even think about that. i was just trying to get her into something other than the plastic tub from walmart.

You'd be super surprised at how many keepers use wal-mart tubs.
