Aggressive jungle
I have had my jungle carpet python for about 8 months now handle him once a week and still he hisses and strikes at me. I get him out of the enclosure using a hook should I just reach in and grab him? My temps are bout 85, humidity 50-60. He is about 12 months old and want to try get him under control before he gets to big. I know some snakes are just bitters but any tips would be appreciated thanks

Re: Aggressive jungle
Had my Jungle for over two years now - got to use a hook to get him out of the viv, no chance of being able to put my hand into the viv, even to change water without being bitten.
However, once he is out he settles down fairly well and can be handled without strikes - tho you have to be careful with him, any hesitancy, hand in front of his face, quick movements and you WILL bleed
Best thing about aggressive/defensive snakes? They never miss a feed

Re: Aggressive jungle
Just be diligent and keep up a regular handling schedule. Chances are it will calm down a but as it gets older, but you never really know.

Re: Aggressive jungle
Never buy a defensive snake in hopes to calm it down. Always assume it will stay just as defensive or even accept it will get worse. If it does calm down you are lucky but don't hold your breath.
Confident smooth movements are always best. Use a hook as much as you can when you need to handle him. I am very big on not handling snakes unless you have to.

Re: Aggressive jungle
I personally would handle him every other day. He may never calm down . Use a hook to get him out.

Why's that Jay? Some carpets are bitey and do benefit from regular handling and do calm down over time. There is also the chance it will never calm down and be aggressive as an adult. IMO you will never know if you don't try. Work with it in the proper way and give it a chance to adjust.

IMO. No snakes benifit from repetitive handaling. If you can show me studies that state otherwise....

No studies at all. I'm speaking from my own experience that's all. I was wondering what your thoughts were since you gave no explanation as to why the OP should completely disregard my comment.
While we're at it, I guess no snake will benefit from being captive and in our possession, but you and the rest of us do it. Can you show me studies that say otherwise?
The OP wants to handle their snake and I offered some encouragement. I don't think that was wrong.

Re: Aggressive jungle
To the OP: I'm sorry to muck up your thread. Good luck with whatever route and advise you choose to follow. Either way I'm happy you're a carpet owner. They are great snakes even if they are a bit nippy.
