It helps if you give us the location of where you saw the snake.

Eastern hognose snake.

And just to address a couple FAQ....

The best thing to do would be release it, and the only reason I say that is because this is not a species that acclimates well to captivity. Unlike its cousin, the western hognose snake, the eastern is extremely adherent to its natural diet of amphibians (mainly toads). It is very problematic and challenging to get one to convert to a rodent diet.

Cute little hognose. If it is coming near your house, it is probably hunting toads. Not something you need to worry about being a danger, and not something easy to keep as a pet. I hope you'll count yourself luck to have such a neat little visitor and let him stay in your yard!
