solid black pythons?
I'm trying to help my friend think of a snake to get. After he saw a mexican black kingsnake, he's been wanting a solid black snake. I told him to look for that or a black milksnake. I'm more of a python guy and he's obsessed with my retics, just not so into the size of them, so he said if there's a solid black python, he'd be down to consider one. I'm having a mental block right now, but are there any solid black pythons out there that don't cost a rediculous amount of money?

Re: solid black pythons?
I haven't heard of any solid black pythons except for a very hard to find and expensive ball python morph. I'd personally go with a mexican black king myself for a solid black.

Re: solid black pythons?
Solid black for not a ton? No, not really when it comes to pythons.
there are a few very black morphs, but many will run $$$$ especially compared to the multiple options that colubrids offer, especially if he doesnt want an overly large snake.

Re: solid black pythons?
Thanks guys. The closest I could think for not that much was a white lipped python. He definitely doesn't have the money for the ball (forgot what the morph was called) and doesn't want to pay that much anyway. He just wants it as a pet, not to breed. We were hoping that there would be a python or boa since they're most likely to just chill in your hand instead of constantly trying to get away like most colubrids do, from my experience at least.
Hopefully soon I'll have the money to get a goldenchild and motley retic and breed them to get that motley goldenchild retic with the dark body and light head that prehistoric has. Then he can just take care of one for me then I'd take it back when it gets too big.

Re: solid black pythons?
Yeah, I can't think of a completely melanistic (solid black) python or boa, and the ones that come close are genetic mutations that cost $$$, or obscure species (like the Boelens python) that are hard to import and breed in captivity (and also cost $$$$).

Re: solid black pythons?
I'm with SOR. Unless your friend is willing to pony up the bread for having a black python or even a boa, if he wants a black snake, a mexican black king is going to be his best bet on affordability.

Re: solid black pythons?
Black Milksnakes tend to be really docile, though they definitely move around if you're holding them. Some wont turn fully black for a few years though. Mine is solid black now at only a year, while Someone I know has one almost the same age from a different line that is only just starting to darken, and is mostly bright red and white otherwise.
Normal Balls are pretty dark, though I certainly don't blame him for wanting an all black snake! :P

Re: solid black pythons?
Boelens or white lipped pythons, both are very black and are probably the least expensive mostly black python. There are some really dark morphs of species in the scrub complex but I don't know if they're available in the US or how.much they cost. I can't wait to see an all black retic, hopefully someone stumbles across the key to that soon.
