Varinid enclosure thread (picture based)
I am thinking a monitor enclosure picture thread may be a good idea. The reason I suggest this is because there is a lot I have found to read but very few pictures. For the newbie to monitors, like myself, reading how and why it is done is good but if you add pictures to the concept it would be a lot more clear how to put what has been read into practice. If there is pictures of species specific enclosures it will help to weed out mistakes that put the varanid through avoidable harsh situations. It will also give ideas to the noob enclosure builder on how they want to do their first(which in turn will save them money and time).
With every picture posting there should be the following.
1) Dimensions and Species housed within.
2) Number of how many are housed within.
3) What type of heating, lighting and light cycle is in use.
4) What all 3 temperatures are kept at.
5) What humidity levels are kept at and how they are maintained in the specific enclosure.
6) Depth and type of substrate mixture that is in use.
Baby and juvenile housing... for those who can not afford to go strait adult housing from the beginning or just decide to keep the babies and juveniles in smaller enclosures. The reason I think this is important is because some people will do it no matter what they are told is best for the monitor... so people who have the know how to do it properly might as well share it so that the noob who decides to do so will at least do it right and not make the monitor suffer. I know there are a lot of mixed opinions on this subject but not telling how to properly do it in hopes that the new monitor owner will be discouraged buy sheer cost of the adult cage is not fair to the animals. Monitors in general are cheap to buy anywhere and I am sure a very high percentage of them are sold as impulse buys and go into jimmy-rigged cages or "jerky boxes", as I have heard them called, because there is little to no proper information on housing the little ones.
To all who post in this thread: There are a lot of individual opinions on a lot of this and please keep that in mind and focus on making this thread as informative as possible. I am sure if a moderator sees a post that contains wrong information or bad husbandry techniques the post will be removed. Please lets not argue and just help people like me learn to care, house and enjoy these amazing creatures.
Thank you all.
Antonio
