Just picked up 3 BP's

They're not in the best condition but nothing I can't handle. I'll get some pics here in a bit after I get my real kids put to bed

Where did you get them from? What kind? gender? age/size?

Re: Just picked up 3 BP's

Got them from a lady I know. Normal. Supposed to be 2 females and a male. Not sure of the age but the pair is a bit small to be breeding and that female has scale rot (can you bump a good link to a cure for me?). The other female is nice and beefy and looks pretty good except for some retained eyecaps and remnants of a bad shed.

Treating scale rot can be tricky. It depends on the severity. If it's pretty bad (scales flaking off), you may need to go to the vet for injectable meds.

No vets around here but I can do a baytril injection if needed. I don't think it's that bad. If she'll let me when I do their pics I'll get one of her underside.

Re: Just picked up 3 BP's

Too bad you got a few sick BP's, but I admire you for taking them in anyway. I'm looking at a couple normals myself tomorrow. There is a guy locally here who apparently has a surplus of normals selling at $20 a piece - So I have to check it out. If all appears well I will get one, maybe two, but hopefully only one....I try to control myself

Re: Just picked up 3 BP's

The scale rot is worse than I thought and I srsly doubt she and I are gonna be friends if she pulls through. She was rather uncooperative for pics but I managed to get some of the belly.

That is after I got it cleaned and doctored. It's raw! This one laid eggs 3 weeks ago.

----------------------------------------------------

Here's the male she was housed with. He felt really dry and had retained eyecaps. They all have retained eyecaps I slathered him down with some VetRx and he was a little more cooperative.

What puzzles me is this guys belly looks fine. As far as I know they've been housed together for a while *shrug*

See? No rot :/

-----------------------------------------------------

This one is the other "female" and is going to be a gift to one of my very best friend's in the whole world. I was only supposed to get the pair but this one got thrown in the deal for an extra $10. She was the only was cooperative enough for a half decent photo-op. She is a sweetheart!

Stuck shed and retained eyecaps but other than that this one is wicked healthy. It's very clear she's been eating like a champ.

Re: Just picked up 3 BP's

Alright so day 3 with me...

The male and the female without scale rot both managed to break free of the remaining shed. The male is settling in so nice he's starting to act like a ball python. The healthy female is still super activated like she's bit unsettled but other than that doing quite well. They were also still really dried out feeling so I rubbed them down with another coat of VetRx. All of these snakes are extremely skittish and majorly head shy, but we all know a little tlc is the best cure for that

The female with scale rot is doing better. I see no signs of infection and it looks as though the healing process may have begun. Tonight I slathered her sore belly up with a good little concoction of Neosporin and Bag Balm. Also she is very alert and feisty, but seems to be liking her enclosure. She still has a few pieces of stuck shed for which I did not apply a coat of VetRx due to the scale rot treatment being pretty stressful. I'm trying to keep her stress to a minimum because of her condition. I hope she pulls through she is a good looking BP.

The male let me get a few half decent pics tonight

I also finally managed to get a top view of the female that has scale rot. She doesn't look too bad from this angle

Wild; PLEASE do not inject Baytril without a culture (which IMO is not necessary). People who self-medicate their snakes (or themselves) are how we got into this craphole of a mess with resistant bacterias. I'm dealing with it right now with young Gracie (MRSA UTI).
Please stay away from non-vet prescribed meds.

I very much appreciate your opinion on this and everything else. I agree with you for the most part. Unfortunately, in my area there is a great lack of acceptable veterinary care for reptiles. The closest one willing to deal with a snake is 30 - 40 miles away and pretty sub-par when it comes to reptile care. I've been forced to learn how to treat my own animals because of this availability issue. But for anyone who has even semi-easy access to adequate veterinary take full advantage of it before self-treating.

Also Mykee I'm only going to resort to antibiotic injections as a last resort I have quite a few other things to try first.

Re: Just picked up 3 BP's

Yeah... I'm really glad snakes don't cry. Between her and my dog, the normal wailing of my kids and the whining of my old man I would absolutely lose my mind. >
