Talking pretty proud

Since Wednesday I've been getting my mom over her fear of snakes. Before she could hardly be in the same house as a snake. Since Wednesday she been in the car with my snake. She wanted me to take cannibal into her office to get a mouse, she knew he was in there but she still went in there and actually hung out in there for a bit. So now I'm slowly working on getting her to touch one. I've even got one of my neighbors over his fear of snakes. Before he'd only get like 5 10 feet from my snake but yesterday as my snake was on his fence. He actually went over and touched him . I think he's even thinking of getting one now haha

Re: pretty proud

Most people have an unrealistic fear of them, mainly due to alot of wrong information about them.

I recently got my SIL to touch and hold one of mine. I've been working on her for months. Like your mom, she wouldn't even be in the same room with my animals.

What I've found that works well is education....it's the key. When I show my animals to people who are scared of them, I give them a basic run down of mine (down to each animal if I'm showing off more than one), from history to basic anatomy. I also offer to let them touch them near the tail, making sure to keep the head of the animal away from them so they don't fear it's going to bite them just for touching. Usually once they figure out they aren't slimy and aren't going to snap at them, they really start to come around. Each species feels different so I use that to bring out my other ones for them to touch.

Good luck with your mom. Plant the seeds and watch them grow. Take it slow and she should eventually come more to accepting them.

The wrong infrormation about them, can lead people into being scared of these animals (like alot of people) or lead them into believing that deadly snakes can't kill people.

That is awesome, it's an amazing feeling when you can help someone face their fear.

I never have the opportunity, really show snakes to people that are afraid of them. It is pretty funny though, to watch kids parents who are scared or don't like snakes. Seeing thier kids touch mine and notice it doesn't bite so then they decide to touch it then they just can't get enough hahaha. Then they just ask me abunch of questions about him. I can't wait to get more.

Thanks i'm definitely working on planting the seeds. Slow is the only way to go hahahaha.

Re: pretty proud

Haha I love bringing Medusa outside when a lot of the neighbors are out on the street, everyone loves to come and pet him. We have a lot of little kids on my street (about 5 or so) that were afraid at first, but really love him now. I love helping people understand that snakes are wonderful critters and not something to be afraid of. I just hear of way too many people killing things like garters when they are gardening because they are afraid.

Re: pretty proud

I'm the same way, I'll take cannibal for "walks" so he can get fresh air and get some sunlight. There are bars/restaurants, right by my house that i pass all the time and it's funny to watch peoples reactions. Some will talk to me for about five minutes, while others will just stair at me while runing into people. Or their jaws just drop cuz one their afraid of snakes and two im just walking around with him in my hand or on my head/ear haha. kids love to come up to me and ask if they can pet him and hold him and everything its pertty cute . Yeah I hear that a lot also it's either little kids telling me their moms told them to. Them running them over on their bikes or simply dad's going it. Every time i hear it, it brakes my heart. I'm half temped to just put my number on flyers and hang em up everywhere. For safe snake removal so no more will get killed haha.

If i am reading these two posts coreectly you took yoursnake into an office to catch a wild mouse? And you walk around the streets with it for "fresh air"??

I am all for handling snakes BUT they do require fairly specific humidity and temperature ranges that aredifficult yo maintain outside of their vivs.

Also how do you ensure noone is passing mites onto your snakes from their own collection? Or that they arent going to injure or drop the snake? What if the mouse had been poisoned or had a parasitic ifection before the snake ate it?

Sorry but all this sounds rather irresponsible to me.

Re: pretty proud

Maybe the weather there is better than the UK. I wouldn't take my snake outside though. I would never feed live and certainly not a wild one. Great idea to educate poeple though and help them get over there fear.

I understand your concerns, but I check the weather on my phone and make sure it is ok to take him out before.

Everyone i have talked to except for one (who was a snake breeder) do not have snakes. I was also concerned about mites so I soaked him in luke warm water and checked him thoroughly there were no no signs of mites. when i let them hold him i keep a close eye on them and always either holding part of him (like the head and tail). as for the mouse he does not eat live mice it was more of him going behind bokes so the mouse would only have one way out i would NEVER do anything to harm my snkes.
