I'm not sure why they are different colors. I would have to think its to help soak up heat faster. It was cool this morning and the dark color phase were the ones we saw first. I didn't see the yellow phase until after 12:00. I'll take the variety though. Not quite in my backyard, it was a 7 mile hike today, but well worth it.
