Hi,
I am considering picking up a chondro next week and I have a question-

1. If I get a baby what tank Should I use? I have a 12Xx12 Exoterra, an 18X18X24 Exo- a 10 gallon- a 20 high-
I would rather not use a plastic tub-

i started my baby gtp off in a 6in widex6in deepx12in tall faunarium, this was placed inside his adult viv and all normal husbandry kept then once he had gone through his colour change he was "released" into his adult vivarium

In my very limited opinion, I still think a plastic tub would be your best bet for a hatchling. It would be much easier to control humidity in a tub than in an exo terra tank unless the room is suited for an ideal GTP environment. The 2nd reason being the opacity of the tub providing extra comfort and security for your little guy.

My breeder told me "Give them what they want, not what you want" - which I believe should be implemented to our husbandry practices, especially when it comes to delicate snakes like green tree's.

This book is an excellent starting point for a beginner, it's where I learned more elaborate information after initial information from the web. It's certainly a good read and comes with beautiful pictures.

As you learn more and more about GTP's, however you will notice the fallacies in this book that you could avoid to better your husbandry skills. Some breeders will go as far as saying that it's not even worth its weight as cage lining. A little extreme perhaps, but I think it's important to learn as much as you can from a wide variety of sources, including forums and breeders. Blogtalkradio.com has a lot of GTP breeder interviews that will give you an idea of a varying degree of practices with equal success out there.

Just read it Yesterday- May hold off a while to find a reliable breeder- He says not to get an animal over the internet or at a show- so I am confused about that Also- why is it bad to get a animal from a reliable sourrce like lll reptile? Thanks,

is " thee " bible on Carpets as far as i'm concerned,but its been out of print for a while,and quite expensive to buy...

i paid £100 ($150) for a 2nd hand paperback edition,it also comes in hard back

is the most RECENT written Carpet book thats very good as well

i don't know the place your talking about,but.....

imo its always best to buy snakes from a reputable private breeder...

with them you will have a better chance of,getting lineage information,a chance to see the parents,clutch mates,

reputable breeders tend to give you better after sales service,all the ones i've bought from,are still in contact with me to this day.

Yes, Greg Maxwell states that you shouldn't buy from the internet or at the show. This is one of the first things he outlines as an important step in successful keeping and for a good reason.

He is guilty of categorizing here, keep in mind that it is very possible for you to find a reliable breeder online. The task is to ask questions to the seller and find out whether or not they are legitimate breeders.

As far as shows go, I wouldn't get one from a show. Find a local breeder (be very choosy) and establish a relationship with him/her. That's the absolute best way to go about it.

i agree it is possible to find good reputable breeders online

i would also meet one of those breeders at a show,to pick up a pre ordered snake

my last 4 snakes were picked up at reptile expo's in Germany

ALL my snakes were got via the internet and show pick ups (from established,reputable people)

that said,i would not just walk about a show and buy from just anyone,there are however a lot of great breeders who attend shows

^ If you know who you are dealing with, shows shouldn't be out of the question.

Inherently, it's difficult to 'thoroughly investigate all claims, and see pictures of the parents and hatch information' when you're at a show. A lot of people are just acting as brokers who pass down unknown animals and will likely tell you what you want to hear when you should be very diligent in purchasing a fair investment animal like green tree pythons.
