Food problem

So, none of the pet stores in this area carry pinkie/fuzzy/hopper rats... Only mice. And our freezer isn't big enough to hold a large amount of frozen snake food. I know some snakes are difficult to switch from mice to rats and I'd like Hikari to just eat rats..
Are boas hard to switch over to rats, can I feed her mice until my family gets a house and we bring the big freezer from Oklahoma?

Re: Food problem

All I can say is I wouldn't buy rats/mice from a pet store in the first place as the prices are insane! I don't know anything about Boa's but from what I have observed I would switch to Rats. Maybe try and find a local rat breeder/supplier? They offer great prices and you don't have to get a large amount of rats or buy them seperately

Re: Food problem

My boas changed immediately the first feeding so I would say they are good switchers. Hikari could definetly wait for a few more months.

Re: Food problem

There's a local pet store whose prices aren't insane, however the smallest rat size they have is 'small', which is larger than an adult mouse.
I may have misunderstood you, but I'd rather not let her go too long without food because it wouldn't be her going off food, it'd be me keeping her from eating.

Re: Food problem

My kids boa switched right over to rats after 2 mice feedings. I have a local site here similar to Craigslist where I get all my rats for dirt cheap from breeders. Even a few rabbit breeder as well. So check Craigslist or other places similar

Re: Food problem

Ah, I have a tendency to misunderstand people. Just checked craigslist and didn't find anything. If I can't find anyone selling rats that Hikari can take in a few days, I'll buy mice.
