Meet the Gaboon

This is Jabba, my 2.5 year old West African Gaboon Viper. He's one of only three terrestrial snakes in my collection, and the only hot. I've had him since he was a newborn baby, no thicker than my middle finger. Nowadays, he's well over 3 feet long, and about as wide as a 12oz can of pop. It's been fascinating to watch him mature. Besides being stunningly beautiful, these guys have awesome personalities. Upon entering his room, I'm greeted with low, repeated hissing sound, very similar to air being let out of a tire. If I approach his cage at eye level, he'll bob his head up and down, and side to side, as if he's trying to tell me "you better back off, buddy". It really is a sight to see. I don't photograph him very often, because I try to limit my interactions with him due to his incredibly dangerous bite. When I do, though, he rarely disappoints. These are some shots I got of him this morning. Enjoy.

Re: Meet the Gaboon

This him on the day that I brought him home, in late February 2010, coiling quite comfortably in a 4.5 inch diameter deli-cup. They grow up so fast...

My all-time favorite venomous snake! Always has been ever since I was a kid and did a report on venomous snakes for school. And you are right, he is stunning!

Thanks for posting.

Re: Meet the Gaboon

I think these are high on the list of anyone who's into venomous snakes. Arboreals are what I love, but I've always wanted a Gaboon.

Nice viper. Gaboons have always been my favorite vipers, as you could tell from my email address.

Thanks They have always been one of my favorites, too. Probably the first venomous snake that I really became enamored with.

Re: Meet the Gaboon

That's a nice Gabby you got there Brian. I too love arboreals foremost but have that special affinity for the Bitis species.

Re: Meet the Gaboon

Thanks again, everyone.

Their skin has very sharp, rough feel to it. This is a stictly hands off snake. On one occasion, I had to tube him to remove some debris from his mouth, and it was an experience to remember. It was cool to finally feel his skin, but restraining this guy is like trying to dissarm a land mine. Very stressfull. I'll be a happy camper if I never have to touch any part of him, ever again.

I agree, jaleely. They are kind of weird looking as babies, almost alien looking. They grow into such majestic creatures, though
