New baby IJ carpet i got today
I got this 2012 CBB IJ female today at a small show, born 2 months ago , has had 1 shed and eaten 3 mice pinkies since birth says the breeder. He tried to feed her before i took her home but she would not eat , so i will try again in 5 days . She was the last of the brood to be sold , and was smaller than the rest and a finicky eater. I got her for 75$ , looks pretty good . She was not nippy at all , but a fast mover !
She did drink as soon as i got her home then i put her in a small tub, with 2 other hides ,4 inch water bowl , some leafy vines for cover and branches with a UTH at 88 on a thermostat and a 25 watt night bulb above the branchs at 90 f , cool side is 74 f , ambient is 82 , humidity is 65% .
Any tips on getting this baby to eat consistantly? Anything else I should know? I have looked up the care sheets but not much info on babies. She explored a bit , then took to the hide in a perfect little coil. Tub is a 66 quart for now , till i get a smaller one as I didn't expect to get a IJ today.

Great pickup, she should be a stunning adult. With the feeding thing, sounds like you have good husbandry so just be patient and don't offer food so much it stresses her out. Keep us posted.

Re: New baby IJ carpet i got today
is it RAT pinkies (pups),or MOUSE pinkies, your feeding her ?
i would NOT offer her mice
i would offer rats only,as it can be hard to get carpets,to cross over from eating, mice to rats
it takes a LOT of jumbo mice,to feed an adult carpet python mate
i have had a few irians that were nervous feeders.....
i gave them plenty, hides, branches and fake plants
i left them alone,in peace and quiet, only going near them,to change their water roughly every 5 days
i also kept them in a small tank until i got the eating regular
^^^^^
all of the above, gives your snake a feeling of security and should stop it stressing out
re night bulb
i give my carpets ambient night time temperatures of low to mid 70's F,with NO health, feeding or shedding issues
that said the irians i have now,are savage feeders, they will eat all day, every day,if you'd let them
thats a very good looking hatchling you got there mate
i look forward to updated pictures as she grows
once they start feeding regular, carpets are usually good eaters, taking prey 2,3,4, times their girth, also they have a great feeding response
i am SURE you will love keeping carpet pythons, they're very addictive snakes
cheers shaun

Carpet pythons can take pretty large meals. I'm always blown away by what they can eat. I know plenty of people who start hatchlings on rats... From birth they never see a mouse in their lives.

Re: New baby IJ carpet i got today
Is your night bulb the red kind? My IJ would not come out of his hide even at night when I had a red globe. As soon as I put a black heat bulb in, he came out every night.

Yes they can eat a rat pink. Mine do. I can't believe you can hold him like that. My 2 month old jcps would be latched on to a finger. Lol. Looks great. Good luck!!

Pretty sure IJs have the most laid back disposition of the localities. A lot of them are finicky eaters too, which would make sense...

Re: New baby IJ carpet i got today
I read a study saying due to their ability to see into the IR range, even red lights can affect most reptiles' day/night cycle. Maybe try switching to a CHE.
