Identify me

New to forums, never owned a snake, but have owned a beardie, and own a few geckos.

Found this little guy out on my front door mat at 12:30am last night.
I kind of would like to keep him if he's not venomous and he's easily adaptable to being kept as a pet.

Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated!
p.s. sorry about the horrible cell phone pictures, camera is at the office!

Re: Identify me

I'm thinking Storeria sp.; either Dekay's brown snake or a red-bellied snake.

Definitely not venomous (or at least not dangerous by any means!).

As far as being a good pet, they stay small (under 24") and are generally placid. Their diet mostly consists of slugs, worms and other invertebrates. If you feel that you can successfully provide such a diet to this snake (most earthworms from the bait shops), its certainly feasible to keep them in captivity.

Something could be said for taking a wild animal out of its habitat. Personally, I think the snake would be just as happy returning to his home somewhere around your yard. But that's just me.

Re: Identify me

Yeah, I've thought about putting him back as well, and I probably will.
I just enjoy learning about new species and it's a very beautiful snake.

Re: Identify me

Looks like a northern brown snake to me, I'd let him go and if you are willing to get a different kind of snake, get something like a captive bred corn snake.

Re: Identify me

What a cool little snake ... If you like the look of them, you can get some sweet looking garters which are about the same size.
