I Just got two Bearded Dragons today!!

I just have to say it somewhere, I just got two Bearded Dragons today!! I got them both from a nice lady today, the two Bearded Dragons came with their 50 gallon enclosure, all dishes, drift wood, everything they could need including a pooper scooper, etc, all for $180

Any tips from experienced Bearded Dragon owners on this snake form? I have 17 years experience with a Leopard Gecko, so I think I will do fine, and I did my research, but people with first hand experience can always give a tip you can't find on your average care sheet, something small and often overlooked but important.

Also when they were babies one got the tip of its tail bit off by another bearded dragon at the pet store, and someone pulled the others tail tip off. Do their tails grow back from 1st hand experience? I will do a simple
Google search, but I wanted to ask on here as well.

Thanks for reading my non-snake related post.

Re: I Just got two Bearded Dragons today!!

Thank is only good for one dragon, separate them immediately. I have a feeling the enclosure might need some work since everything she gave you was very....unneeded, personally I don't use dishes and i'm assuming they are on some form of sand since you need a pooper scooper. I don't believe in sand as depending on the type the issues it can cause range from mild to deadly.

Please explain your set up and list temps please. And get another tank asap. 50 gallon is only good for one beardie and they shouldn't be housed together.

Re: I Just got two Bearded Dragons today!!

Thanks for the reply. The basking spot is between 35 degrees Celsius to 39, it's a basking light, don't know if it has UV built into it or not? There is also an under tank heater on the cold side so it doesn't get to cold and at night it stays on, but the basking bulb is turned off. It came with calcium and vitamin E powder to dust the crickets, but don't know if that is good enough to make up for no UV if the basking bulb is only heat and no UV? They have lived on sand their whole life which is sad, I read everyone agrees you shouldn't put them on sand if under a year old, and they were under a year old until I bought them. It seems like everyone has different opinions about the sand for older than a year, some hate it and some say they haven't had problems, but who is really right?

I did read even on a basic care sheet the other day to seperate them, I might have to sell one because I'm out of room for tanks.

Here are some pictures of how they came. Hope I gave enough info.*

Your animals need to be separated. Bearded dragons do NOT do well with other bearded dragons, and there seems to already be evidence of fighting (both have missing tails). Separate them today.

Yikes, poor things and thier tails

Do they fall off as a defense like some other lizzards, or do you think they actually bit each others tails off??

If a human did that on purpose, I'd certainly like to smack them silly!!

No, their tails have not been cut. It appears that they were bitten off by cagemates.

This is sad, I was told the one had it's tail pulled off at the pet store by someone and the other had its tail bite off by another older male bearded dragon at the pet store where they kept all the older and younger Bearded Dragons, male and female together.

This lady who I bought them from assured me they were fine together because they were both females and said females can be kept together, thats fine, just not males and females, I thought she would know enough about Bearded Dragons because she has has had them from the time they were born to a year old, but I guess not and clearly this is animal abuse if you don't separate them and should. All I have heard since purchasing them as a reply to my first post is they need to be separated. This puts me in a bad spot because these are the last animals I intended on purchasing, she assured me they were both females and ok together which is not true I'm finding out, and my land lord said this is the last aquarium I could bring into the house, there is also no more room. My only options are to move out, which does 't work so good, or I will have to sell one of them asap or if I can't sell just one asap I will find someone who has the space and can take proper care of them both and separate them immediately and sell both of them, will have to do whatever comes first.

This makes me look bad purchasing animals that have not been kept properly their whole lives and having bought them not knowing myself everything about Bearded Dragons other than a basic pet store care sheet and just taking the previous owners advice as the truth having never owned one.

Wow, I feel for you. I really do. For this, I could suggest selling this tank, and getting a MUCH larger one. Simply add a divider that is not clear. One tank, two beardies, problem solved.

Thanks for your reply, thats a really good idea, thanks, but sadly I couldn't get a much bigger tank though, there is literally no more space, there was just enough space to fit the 50 gallon, it goes right to the wall, and on the other side it goes right to my fish tank. I can't put it in another room, has to be in my bedroom.

This is too bad, really sad it worked out this way I was really excited to get them, poor Bearded Dragons.

Re: I Just got two Bearded Dragons today!!

I'd say ditch the sand, it can cause impaction and irritation of the eyes (just what iv read up) and get a second hide, the one you've got looks a bit small if the two wanna go in there. Best thing to do (i think), if u don't have enough space for a bigger tank, is sell one dragon. (though the other dragon might get depressed without the other one??) not sure if they think like that...

Thanks for the reply, yah I was wondering if one might get depressed? Who knows? Good info will get a second hide and I guess I haven't heard anything bad about newspaper so I will switch over to it since I have a number of replys stating to ditch the sand. I'm pretty sure they will tear the newspaper up or lift it up and go to the bathroom on the bottom of the cage, but o well I can deal with that, maybe I will try taping it down, but we will see how it goes first.
