Snake Jaw Alignment Or Broken - HELP
I am not exactly sure what happened, but it seems like my Capret Python did something to his jaw and his lip is receding. I am very worried, he seems to rubbing his head into the ground due to the irritation of it, as well as, opening his mouth in attempts to reset his jaw. What should I do? I don't really want to take him to a vet due to my previous experiences with vets only making things worse.
Please help,
Chris

Re: Snake Jaw Alignment Or Broken - HELP
Here's what you need to do. First get a Q-tip or something to careful open it's mouth. When you open it's mouth look to make sure it doesn't have a snagged tooth. If it does very carefully unsnag it. I had it happen twice once with a Ball that snagged it tooth while eating. A tooth from his bottom jaw got stuck on the upper jaw. Couple years latter i had my big Carpet do the same thing.
If it's not a snagged tooth then just leave it alone and in a few days the snake should be able to just pop it's jaw back into place. As it ate recently?

Re: Snake Jaw Alignment Or Broken - HELP
He was able to get most of his lip back to normal, however there is still a part of his lip on his right side that looks crooked. Should I try to disinfect the area if I open his mouth and see blood?
Yes, he had just finished eating and then about 20 mind later I noticed this. Although, he didn't have the.problem as soon as he finished eating. He may have struck the glass or something

Re: Snake Jaw Alignment Or Broken - HELP
Chuck has already covered it. I'd check for snagged tooth and then just wait; he'll probably realign his jaw back himself. It's unlikely that the jaw is broken if it happened during feeding.

Re: Snake Jaw Alignment Or Broken - HELP
Thanks, I just worried myself from other sources that I read online. He doesn't seem to be stressed out anymore, and he is acting normal. I'll give it a couple weeks to sort out.
Thanks

Re: Snake Jaw Alignment Or Broken - HELP
I have had a dumeril's boa do this after striking and missing, and she righted herself after two days....and I have had my sand boa have a dislodged lower jaw/chin...it was more towards the end of her face, chin area, instead of jaw..kind of where the split is on their chin that opens up when they expand for food.
That was entirely my fault and i *freaked* out.
I got very dramatic : )
She managed to fix herself, and after about a week looked normal....however she did let it sag a big when she ate. She eats perfectly fine now, months later.
Time heals all wounds so they say!
Good luck!
BTW you shouldn't see any blood if you open the mouth. If you can hold him still to see if the skin is caught on a tooth...you can carefully use something dull but precise to unhook it. If you dont' see that, then i'd just let it be for a while and he'll adjust it : )

did you open his mouth and check his lip is NOT caught on a tooth ?
if it is.....
i use a wooden pencil to open its mouth and check
re holding the head steady.....
get a firm grip of the snakes head
put your thumb on the right side of his bottom jaw
put your wedding ring finger on the left side of his jaw
put your index finger and the one next to it,on top of his head
the back of his neck and head should be,tight/firmly,up against the palm of your hand
the top of his head being held downwards, with your index finger and the one next to it
re pencil.....
place the pencil HORIZONTALLY on the edge of his lips,at the very front of his mouth
gently wiggle/rub the pencil on his lips, until you can get the pencil in a few millimeters
then edge the pencil towards the back of the mouth, gently but firmly lift his TOP jaw up,as you move towards the back of his mouth
work your way ALL the way to the BACK of his mouth, until you can go NO further
his mouth should now be wide open
re if his lips stuck on a tooth.....
i would have decent light in the room and a TORCH,to shine in his mouth,to look for any teeth in the lip,a pair of decent tweezers
the tooth may be still " attached " to the snake,so care will have to be taken,as to not break/damage the tooth, while unhooking the lip.....
when dealing with a perfectly healthy tooth, stuck in a snakes lip,you must firmly but gently, take hold of the skin on his lip, then unhook it from the tooth
the tooth may also have been, pulled out,or broken,by the lip
if the tooths broken, make sure you get all the tooth out the lip,if you leave a piece in,it may lead to an infection
if your snake has broke a tooth, make sure its all out, until it heals, keep an eye on it for infection
if theres broken tooth still in the socket ,the take him to a VET
^^^^^
my apology's if you already knew the above
let us know how it goes mate
all the best shaun

Re: Snake Jaw Alignment Or Broken - HELP
Thanks for the detailed information. His jaw looks fine now, if not for some minor bruising. I'd imagine that he will make a full recovery by next week.
