So Cassie was being stubborn and not eating very well and I didn't know why. So I tried making the food very fast and she took intrest and ate like a champ, I think she was really bored

Your monitor is not bored. They do not need activities. They just need proper husbandry. Whatever you do, DO NOT give it stuffed animals to play with. LOL.
Plenty of food, places to dig, and nice hot temps will keep your varanid more than occupied.

Curious ... why do you say not to give a stuffed animal?
i gave one to my black throat and he carries it around with him and uses it as a pillow. never saw any violent behavior with it, doesn't stress him out.
and I have to say (even tho i am a beginner with varanids), I disagree with your statement that they don't need activities, and that they don't get bored.
from what I have witnessed with Ares (my Black Throat) he loves exploring and actually enjoys being stimulated mentally.
I'm not calling you a liar or anything like that so don't take offence please.
I just think you are underestimating their capability of cognitive and "emotional" reactions.
I am of the opinion that they do in fact have the ability to enjoy, get depressed, get angry, and be happy.
I know alot of people say otherwise,
and I wish I had the link, but there is a video of a guy walking into a pen with like a dozen b/w tegus, and setting down 2 plates of food, and they all completely ignore the food and go to him for attention.
I believe the video has been posted on this forum somewhere (ahem... Wayne?) and if you could come up with another logical reason that they would do that, I am all ears.

Seriously, they are not dogs or companion animals. They do not carry/play with toys or use pillows.
That tegu vid has been around a long time. Many people say its BS and many think it shows them looking for attention. I believe it is BS. Only because I have kept and bred them and do not act like that unless they want to eat, breed, or get out of the cage they are in. Fact is, it is one small frame. We do not know what was out of frame that they were actually focusing on. Also, with all of thos tegus in one cage, why would they want the attention of the owner?
Monitors can learn. That I will admit. However, they are not capable of emotions. Not like the ones complex social mamals are capable of. People anthroporphisize in order to try an "talk" to their pets. The fact is, they do not understand us. I know this from keeping these animals for many years. I also know that many people confuse intellegence with hard wired evolutionary instinctive behaviors.
Like I said, if you provide them with what they need like ample space, proper heat and humidity, and a good diet, they do not need anything else to stimulate them.
