Wood identification

As the title says, can you identify this wood?
First two pictures are the same tree

There are several types of wood in here. I can identify the aspen. That's about it.

And last. Possibly the same kind as the first two?

Re: Wood identification

It's pretty hard to ID a tree down to the species without a picture of anything more than old wood....

Why do you want to know? Have any pics of the actual tree?

Re: Wood identification

I don't know what different types of wood you have out west but it looks like black locust to me.

I just want to make sure I don't have cedar or pine.

Definitely think some of it is black locust.

You would be able to smell cedar or pine. If you have doubts, get it wet and you will be able to tell by smell for sure

Re: Wood identification

I think the first and last examples are going to be cedar or fir, the bark looks right, and especially the red tinge on the last pic gives it away.

all the others (other than the aspen which you already know) I haven't a clue

Re: Wood identification

I went outside and took some pics of my black locust. Some big ones and some smaller and a look at the color of the bark when you snap a piece off.

Hope this helps a bit

Re: Wood identification

The inside of the bark in the first pic looks exactly like locust (not saying it is). I've peeled plenty for fence posts so just my opinion fwiw.
