mystery king?
i got a gorgeous king the other day but i'm not sure what kind she may be. i've been trying to find anything online that might look like it but ive had no luck. also, shes been quite ornery since i've got her. i'm guessing just from the environment change. but any tips on trying to get her to chill out?

Re: mystery king?

If it's a kingsnake then by best bet would be this dotted morph california king, but it could be something else

Re: mystery king?
not sure of the morph but as far as " chilling her out" howl long have you had your snake?? let her adjust and settle in for 5plus days before handling! then once a good feeding habit has been established and your set up is as close to ideal as you can get it, start a gentle and consistent handling routine. start short then increase time accordingly. you'll have a chill snake with a little time and effort also dont be afraid of a few nips here and there too.

Re: mystery king?
i've already been tagged by her once haha. so thats when i just decided to let her adjust. if its a banana king it would be fitting because shes a nice pale yellow with brown so she kinda looks like a banana haha. i've only had her 3 days or so. i got her and another king whose a normal banded but a nice chocolate color. 80 for both so i hope i didn't over pay. either way they're awesome so totally worth it. the mystery one in question is about 30 inches and the male banded is around 4 feet.

Re: mystery king?
sounds bout right for the price good job. probably want to get a feed in before lots of handling. but yeah if you do dive in head first and they bite you you can not let them go. thats what they want. they have to know you mean them no threat. it takes time and patience but its well worth it when you get to spend quality time with your snakes

Re: mystery king?
Kingsnakes are rarely a problem to feed when everything's according to their needs. Savage little buggers lol!

Re: mystery king?
Both are California king snakes Great pick ups!! You'll be very happy with them. The young one will calm down with regular handling in no time.

Re: mystery king?
Yep, both are cali kings. The mystery one is either a stripe or a banana. Nice pickups, congrats!

Re: mystery king?
Nice kings! The first one looks kinda like an abberant but I'm not completely up to date on the king morphs.
As far as "chilling out" they need a few days to acclimate. I wouldn't handle her for a few days. When you do and you get tagged, hold them for another 5 minutes or so. At least their bites don't hurt and rarely draw blood. Kings are typically antisocial but will tolerate handling well once they're used to it on a regular basis. They're voracious eaters and they're kind of like a little snake with a big snake attitude. My old king was all tail rattle and no bite (although he was prone to biting strange males) and tolerated handling very well. My new king I'm still working with. It's going slow since I've been working so much. When I first got her she liked to try to eat pinky fingers. So I started handling her with gloves until she was comfy with it. Now I'm taking the gloves off and so far no biting
Good luck with yours!
