Just a question
I was at the petstore today and noticed they kept their sand boa on sand, and I know because of impaction that they should be kept on something else, such as aspen so I brought it up with him and he said he didn't know and that they would change it. The other worker said that they were called sand boas for a reason.
I was just wondering what were the reasons for not keeping them in sand? Can it cause anything other than impaction? I was thinking RI but I'm not sure. I've never had a sand boa myself.

Re: Just a question
My number one reason is for the risk of impaction, another is it's just plain messy, and i was literally cleaning their water bowls every couple of hours because they would drag sand into it. I know others who keep their Sand Boas on sand, and have had no problems, but i prefer Aspen

Re: Just a question
The reason the pet store employees kept their sand boas on sand is because they are dumb. Really, really dumb. 99.9% of all pet store employees are dumb.

Re: Just a question
I always kept my Sand Boas in very fine aquarium sand and never had a problem. I found it very easy to keep clean and the snakes were always happy and healthy.

Oh alright, makes sense. :P I could only imagine the water bowls getting messy all the time.

I have to agree, it's sad that they aren't more educated on the animals they are selling. When I bought my cornsnake, she was telling us how they get over 12 feet long! And when I got my sav monitor, how they can be kept on newspaper. It really frustrates me.

Re: Just a question
Pet shops are first and foremost a business. Businesses focus on profit. Profit is achieved by low overhead and moving merchandise, not by spending money to educate your staff and making really impressive displays in cages that house temporary money-makers. Top that off with the low wage the employees make and just be happy they're even willing to say Hello to you. If you want knowledge and proper care, you're looking for it in the wrong place by going to a pet shop.

Re: Just a question
I agree with that of course, I've always gotten my pets and went online rather than listen to what I was told. But I also think they should be hiring people with experience on their animals. I know those in my petstore and educated on the animals they sell, but just not with the right information.

Its awfully tough to do that considering what theyre paying them. I wouldnt mind working for a pet store myself. I know I dont know everything about every species of reptile there is but I think I would certainly do better than what they have now but I cant afford to live on what they pay.

Re: Just a question
That's true. I'm planning to start off working in a petstore though, because I know it's something I would love doing. I wouldn't want to not bother giving people the right information because I'm not being paid much, but that's just me. :P
