breeding ball pythons

ok so i haven't bred before but i want to get into it. i have a couple proven males & proven females that i've purchased and plan to breed for the next season. i have a couple questions tho.

do the male & female have to be a specific temps?? and what are good weights for them???

also, when should i start putting them together?? idk when when the breeding season starts for them.

Re: breeding ball pythons

These questions lead me to ask this.... Have you researched the breeding of ball pythons at all other than asking here? Not meaning to offend but asking when the season is, is like asking where the gas goes in your car. If you don't know already or haven't Googled it maybe you should before you consider breeding. I'm sure orhers will chime in and try to talk you out of it. If you learn what you need to and go ahead with it great. But after reading more about it you may find out you don't want to anymore. Lots and lots of ball python breeders out there right now. First questions you need to answer is this.... What will you do with the babies? Can you find GOOD homes for them? If you can't find them good homes what then? Can you keep all of them because you may get stuck with all of them.

Re: breeding ball pythons

yea i've done all the research online & stuff but i wanted to get information straight from someone who has actually bred ball pythons. because different links online said different stuff ((if only slightly)).
but i know that some things you read about ball pythons can be off, such as the fact that everywhere you read, it says fish tanks are an acceptable enclosure when in fact it is not. got that info from someone who studies them.

What do they do to "study" them?

Honestly, just stick the male in with the female. Have fun. That's all there is to it. Don't make it into some scientific endeavour as it really isn't. The link Caylan used is a very good guide line and it's one I referred to, and still refer to for my collection. Like I said though, a GUIDE LINE, your animals will tell you what is going on.

Re: breeding ball pythons

Maybe it's time to resurrect the Tanks VS Tubs Deathmatch thread again.

Tanks can work just fine for a snake the just take a little more work.

Re: breeding ball pythons

This book is expensive but goes into really good detail about genetics, breeding, etc.

Re: breeding ball pythons

I prefer the snakekeeper's video Alessia. It doesn't cover the genetics but the movie is way more detailed in regards to breeding. Very useful.

The snake keeper's video? haven't heard of it. Probably something I'd like to watch. Is it a DVD? what's the title?

Re: breeding ball pythons

This is what it's called.

Dr. Mark Seward's Ball Python Breeding by Dr. Mark Seward with Colette and Dan Sutherland

Last time I checked, it can be found on amazon in dvd format. Originally, came out in VHS and it's kind of expensive. Last time I checked it was in the 80 dollar range. Well worth it though!

Kevin McCurley! Great guy he owns NERD over here in NH.

I also recommend that, I can say first hand he takes real good care of his animals.

I own it on video, bought it over 10 years ago.
