Carl Was My Bloodred Stripe
Its been 7 months since Carl passed away but reading certain threads here made him come to mind again.
A little history...
February 14, about the same time I bought the 4 shelf 37 qt AP rack, I also bought Carl. He was a deep, bright Bloodred Stripe Corn and I only paid $25 for him. I didnt even know what I had or how rare he was until after I got him. Another Corn breeder after seeing the attached pic, he was like "A Bloodred Stripe?!?!?! Where did you get that beast?!" In that conversation, he convinced me to breed him. Thats why I bought Schatzi. The idea was to produce triple het normals. Then after a few years breed 2 of the offspring together to a produce in one clutch a Christmas assortment of morphs to ultimately end up with a Fire Stripe which is triple homozygous for Amelanistic, Bloodred and Stripe. After a few months we noticed him losing weight so shortly after originally acquiring Schatzi I took him to the vet who told me to increase his feeding to every week instead of every other week. I did exactly that but it did no good. He did not make it and on June 27, he passed away. On another forum, the same day, I posted an obit type of thread and this is what I said there...
"Carl my bloodred stripe corn passed away today suddenly and for unknown reasons. He had been underweight so I took him to the vet for a checkup to see what I would need to do to get his weight up in time for breeding season next year. The vet said his feeding needed to be every week instead of every other week and that is what I did since. Last week he did not eat so we waited until this week in which I gave him a pinky. Today the pinky was still in there but Carl had already died. Im still stunned by it all but I thought Id post this and say Im sorry Tony. Not sure what happened but I will make good on my breeding promise to you somehow."
I sold Schatzi a few months after that to pay for the pair of IJs I now have but when I got her back, I was thrilled. Somehow, some way, sometime, I will follow through with these breeding plans, just with another male but it must be with a male thats at least on par with Carl.

That's a sad story... Wish there'd been something you could've done. He sure was gorgeous though!! You should post more pics of him if you have any

Re: Carl Was Bloodred Stripe
Thank you both. I was so glad to get Schatzi back even though Carl was gone. Even though my breeding plans are on hold with her, I can still enjoy her as a pet as well.

Re: Carl Was Bloodred Stripe
He was absolutely gorgeous. I would love to have a corn with his coloring but have little doubt it would be far beyond my means ($25 was a sweet deal). My condolences on your loss. I take it the cause of death was never determined?

Re: Carl Was Bloodred Stripe
Sorry to hear that. Bloodred stripes are one of the most beautiful morphs and aren't cheap either.

Re: Carl Was Bloodred Stripe
Thank you all for your responses. It was hard having these memories come fresh in my mind yesterday so I had to put it in words.

As far as why the pinkie (and it was a rat pinkie since I prefer to feed my snakes rats. There is just more to them than mice), Carl had been on weaner rats and when he regurged I reduced his feed size to rat pups (20-29g). He was ok with that until the week before he passed away when he refused his meal. The week later when I offered the pinkie, it was because I wanted to see if he would actually take this considering the prior week, plus the pinkie was injured from a mom fight and it needed to get fed off.
