Talking I Think I Need An Intervention

Long story short, I just ordered a bunch of animals for me and a couple of my friends. Since they're helping pay for shipping, I decided to get a couple of animals myself with a gift card I received for Xmas.

One friend is getting an albino corn snake for his girlfriend. They have a bp now (that I helped him get last summer). She originally wanted an albino burm, but talked them both out of it (they can always come over and play with mine lol) so he opted for a corn for her after discussing it with me. She's still a bit timid with his bp so I suggested an albino corn for her. (a HUGE reason why she should not be having a large animal....they're more than just for looks and a huge responsibility that I know she's not ready for and neither is he)

Another friend has been wanting a scorpion so after I done a little research, I suggested an emperor scorpion. I got him a couple of care sheets and I'm going to help him get it set up (but I'm NOT touching it lol).

For myself, I got a couple of animals that I've been thinking about getting for a while. When I first got back into snakes, I wanted another Colombian RTB. So I have a 2011 female coming. I have also wanted a colubrid for a while. I really want a lavender corn, but the store didn't have anymore, so instead I opted for a 2011 female reverse stripe cali king, which is what I had wanted years ago instead of the black and yellow banded one I got.

The boyfriend has no experience with colubrids and doesn't think he'll like them, but if this king is like my other king, I think he's in for a nice surprise

This will make 10 snakes total for me. Last time I kept I had up to 13, but that was over a period of a few years, and most were rescues that I got healthy and rehomed. How quickly I've gotten my collection back up. I jokingly tell people why I have two jobs: one is to support my family and the part time one is to support my pets I also should mention that 2 of the animals I'm claiming are actually my kids', but as long as I have to buy their feeders, I'm claiming them

I think I seriously need an intervention...I still have about 6 empty nests that can be filled.

Nah.. when you have closer to 100, then you need an intervention.

I have 25 at the moment, and even though i'm exhausted when i get home from work, each and every one of them means the world to me, and though i may be saving for a car, i'm also thinking about what i can buy snakewise, when i get my tax refund!

I have twenty four. You're far from needing an intervention.

Now where is one to turn! The whole idea that I will be a star breeder in a few years, in my mind, gives me the ability to "collect my breeding stock." Legitimized hoarding I call it!

Re: I Think I Need An Intervention

lol

I've only began keeping again since the end of May. I'm amazed at how many I've managed to collect since. For some reason this time around I'm more enthusiastic and really trying to give them the best possible care. Not that I didn't the last time, but it could have been much better. It's like I have a fever, kind of like I have with motorcycles. Back then, every little bit of extra money I could scrape up went to something motorcycle related. Now it's every little bit of money I save, I get something for the snakes. A new home, a new water bowl, another snake, new thermometers, new snake, new house, more water bowls, another snake.....

I texted my daughter and told her. She asked me if I had gotten a new tire for my car yet. Ummm....no. She made me feel a kid who'd done something wrong but wasn't really in trouble. lol Honestly I had forgotten about the stupid tire.

I have one rule. I will not knowingly buy a male (I'm partial to females....dunno why). I know if I get a male, I'll get a female of the same and get into breeding. I don't want the temptation of breeding lol The only male I want will be retic and I only want one retic. So it can be male (but then there's an interest in bateaters and I have two burms. O.O)

Re: I Think I Need An Intervention

Oh ya, if any scorpion keepers can give any advice or suggestions that I can pass along to my friend, that would be great. It's his first scorpion and neither of us are familiar with these guys. He wants to give it the best care he can so any helpful info is appreciated!

Thanks

Re: I Think I Need An Intervention

Scorpions are really easy. I keep my emperor in a ten gallon on Eco Earth, with hides and a water bowl. He gets misted every few days.

Re: I Think I Need An Intervention

One reason I suggested the emperor was because it seemed to be easy to keep and from what I've read are fairly docile but still needs to be handled with caution. Also great for beginners.

Not exactly sure how I feel about it being shipped in the same package as the snakes though. I'm not ashamed to say I'm scared of scorpions lol

How often do you clean it's cage and how deep is the substrate?

And what temps/humidity are you keeping yours?

Re: I Think I Need An Intervention

Substrate is about three inches. I have an under tank heater on one side of the tank, no other heat. It's between 75 and 80f. Humidity is between 60 and 75% (lower on the warm side, higher on the cool side).

The only real issue that will come up with handling an emperor is if you're allergic. Somebody once told me if you're allergic to bees, there's a good chance you will be allergic to them. I'm not sure how true that statement is, but I prefer to not take my chances, since I AM allergic to bees.

Re: I Think I Need An Intervention

Thanks for the info! I've decided to give the scorpion to him for an early birthday present since his birthday is next month, along with some extra supplies I have here. He hasn't paid me yet (and is good for the money) since he doesn't get paid until the day they arrive. But it's an inexpensive pet, something I know he'll appreciate and take care of. He's been a great friend and co-worker, often letting me pick up one of his shifts a week to make sure I can provide for my family and animals, so it's the least I can do to say 'thank you'.
