Hello from West Virginia

Hi everyone, I'm Lydia from West Virginia. I'm a snake newbie, though my partner is not. I just rescued my first snake from a home that couldn't care for it anymore. Currently determining sex and getting it fully set up in the new home (and brainstorming names). The new snake is an 18inch ball python and is my first snake. My partner, B, has had a series of snakes and currently he has a handsome 6ft long red tail boa named Arrow. I found this forum while surfing around and it seemed like a great community to join for any questions I might have and to share.

Currently our little menagerie includes : both snakes, one medium pet rat (that lived through a few days in the tank with Arrow when he wasn't hungry and was then adopted by me) named Bonecrusher Rattington III, 3 tank raised small (for now) koi fish named Mac, Charlie, and Dennis, one Betta fish named Maurice the Gangster of Love, and one snoring snaggle-tooth cat named Harriet Tubman.

Pleased to meet you all and I look forward to conversations in the future!

Welcome from the other side of West Virginia! You're right, this is a great place to get information. And laughs.

How about "Bow" for a name? That way you'd have Bow & Arrow....

Re: Hello from West Virginia

Welcome, just something i picked up from your post - you left a live rat in the viv with a snake for a "few days"??? You should NEVER leave an unattended live prey item in with a snake as there is a good chance the prey will attack the snake.

Re: Hello from West Virginia

Wow I must have been posting in my sleep to have missed that.

Please NEVER ever leave a live Rat/mouse in with a snake. That is asking for trouble. I won't post pictures but rats/mice have been known to get hungry or mad and eat the scales off of the snakes.

Welcome to the forum! We're happy to have you here! I'd love to see pics of your animals.
Like the others have said before me, leaving a mouse/rat in an enclosure with a snake unsupervised for any amount of time is dangerous.

Hyas & Welcome!!

This is an excellent place to gain knowledge about reptiles and everyone will share their thoughts, opinions, and wisdom from the combined generations of experience. I am currently trying to type as Sasha (My Ball Python) wraps herself around my fingers... It has taken me 10 minutes to type this...lol

Re: Hello from West Virginia

Sorry all! I realize how that sounded, the rat didn't live in the tank for 3 days, she was periodically dumped in and when Arrow ignored her (he's usually a really fast eater) the rat would come out and live in a little tank next to his. She was "on the menu" for 3 days before brett decided it was time to get rid of her and i decided i wanted a pet rat.

Re: Hello from West Virginia

Here's Arrow basking under the heat lamp, we are on the look out for a cage to upgrade too this is a pretty big tank but it's narrow and he's a big guy...

And this is the new ball python. I ended up naming him Allister actually. I snapped this pic when he was warming up from the car ride and I was setting his tank up.
