Question Bags of dirt!!

Okay, So we are going to be getting supplies to build a Savannah Monitor cage! for the substrate im using 50% Top soil/Dirt, And 50% playsand. (They like to burrow) The Tank is going to be 8 feet long by 4 feet wide. I need to make a two foot ground of the substrate. How many bags of 50 pound dirt/sand do you think i need? Im thinking 10 bags of soil, 10 bags of sand. Im not to sure though.

Thanks.

Chris

Re: Bags of dirt!!

Tough call for me, I used a shovel and a pickup truck & harvested creek bank clay soil from out back.

Please make sure you post the design of your build, I can tell you if the dirt will blow apart the box or not.

Example, use a minimum of 4"x4" (four by fours) on the corners, Brutally over-building now saves the cage from falling apart later.

Use a minimum of 3/4 flooring plywood for it's sheer strength.

Re: Bags of dirt!!

Make sure you sift through all the top soil. Most bags of that have extra goodies in them. I would guess that 20 bags overall would not be enough. I'm trying to picture a pallet of them... and I think you get 50 bags on a pallet. A pallet is 4ft wide x 4ft deep and about 3.5ft tall. so to get a 4x8 2ft deep with dirt you will need about 50 bags. correct me if I'm wrong but in my years working with pallets of dirt they don't go a long ways.

Re: Bags of dirt!!

Why not just put a kennel in the yard!! Texas has the perfect climate.

Great advice.
Yes you will find lots of goodies, I found nails, glass, wine cork and a toy car last time.
