Moss???

I'm trying to find moss to use with my Brazilians. So far all I can find is a product called Quebec Moss. It is a dollar store item so I'm hesitant about using it. I'm concerned that it may have been treated with pesticides or something. Should I avoid this stuff and go to a garden centre to see if they have any

I have used sphagnum moss on BRB's with excellent results. Available at Home Depot

The sphagnum works well or even as a base use the zoo med eco earth product. It holds a good level of humidity then place some moss on top.

I've never heard of Quebec Moss before If you can't be sure it hasnt been treated with something its best to err on the side of caution and avoid it altogether. The best moss to use IMHO for brazilians is sphagnum. It works well to keep an adequate humidity level, but I found it too difficult to work with as a substrate. It's virtually impossible to spot clean (the only thing visible are the uric acid accumulations), and BRB's excrete alot more liquid urine that many other species, which is impossible to clean up after as well. I think its more suited to humid hides. The best loose substrate I have found for these guys is slightly dampened Carefresh. You can easily spot any messes, it holds humidity very well, permits burrowing, and is environmentally friendly to boot My favourite substrate though to use for these guys is newspaper or papertowel. The ink gets their chins a little grungy looking sometimes and it looks dreadful, but its super easy to maintain, very cheap, and serves the purpose very well Hehehe... ok I just babbled off and away from your question. Hope you found something in there that was of some use

They're on news print now with no hides, they hid under it. Where can I get carefresh and sphagnum moss? The sphagnum I figured I would look for it at a garden centre maybe, would they have that sort of thing? When I move them to a new cage I want to give them multiple hides with moss inside for humidity.
Thanks,
Trevor

Most pet stores carry the Everfresh product. As well Everfresh is running a special if you buy one get one free. If you cant find any email me and I will help track some down for you.

Sphagnum moss can be found in a Home Depot or even a Walmart. But make sure it is not decorative moss.

Check the small animal department in your pet shop for carefresh. Many people use it for there rodents and smaller animals.

It is a wonderful product, it is all I use.

Just a hint/ tip when you use care fresh put it into a strainer and shake out the dust type stuff, before putting it into the enclosure

Hey Grant, how are ya? good to see you on the forums, yes, that eco-earth is great for BRBs, the only problem I found is feeding time, that stuff gets all over the rodent and the inside of the snakes mouth. You just have to make sure you feed in a seperate container when using that stuff.

Actually the Ecoearth is not a real threat if properly used as per the instructions. The sphagnum moss posses the same risk. as long as the food is fairly dried when being used it will not "grab" alot of the moss or Eco earth while it is being consumed.

Linds though is actually right in this situation when keeping juvenile or baby brb's. Keeping them on paper or papertowel.
