Boa Info, I've Changed my mind...

After a good 4-5 months of thinking of gettting a Black blood python, i have reluctantly decided to change my mind, and get a RTB instead... why?

because i don't feel comfortable enough of an owner to keep a black blood at this time... i know every snake is different, but i know a RTB will be a little more relaxed and not as nervous of a snake.. i will however get a black blood, just not at this time...

any way, i have been watching videos all day, and reading on RTB, did a few searches on here as well, i just wanted to know... how big to they get...

ive read, 5 ft max, ive seen 10ft, lol so i am just lost as can be...

ive also seen that a 5ftx2ft would be better instead of a 4x2??

starting him/her off in a 20g long tank with a plexiglass lid and prolly paper towel for substrate... OR- maybe a tub, depending on how big her / her is...

i also want to thank everyone for the help with the black blood info i needed, and i dont want people to think that i am just "impulse" buying or buying a snake just because.... i eventually was going to get both of these snakes, just decided to get RTB 1st, then black blood.... (albino BP for xmas)

thanks!

We know your not. You been researching Black Bloods for months and decide that your not quite ready for one just yet. That shows your anything, but impulsive. Now your researching RTB. It just shows your being smart and not just rushing in. It's good to see your using your head to decided.

As far as size i use to have a 8.5 foot female and my buddy had a 10 foot
male. I have seen a 14 footer at the Indianapolis Zoo years ago.

Re: Boa Info, I've Changed my mind...

8 and a half is big for a female. 7 is more common for females.
As for males 7 feet is huge most are 6 feet some even 5 feet it depends a lot on how you feed them

Re: Boa Info, I've Changed my mind...

I have my female who is a June hatch in a 20gal and she is just fine lots of room she's about 2.5ft long and is currently on rat fuzzies she's a great little snake when I bought her I was told to expect her to get to a max 9ft so when I move I plan on building her a 6'x 3'x 18"

Even though 8 is more realistic I like the extra room

Thanks Marvelfreak, that really makes me feel better

any way, i feel i can deal with a 10 foot rtb, but i just cant get past the bad a#$ look and sometimes the temper of a blood...

i will be looking for a male, since i have no need or reason for a female, i will not ever be breeding boas, maybe BP and corns, but never boas...

i just dont want to get him, and then her turns out to be a 15 foot Super boa and then i will need a bigger cage, since i am already going to be building a 4x2x2....

but if i need to go say 5x2x2 that will be fine, just ALOT harder to make lol... since the wood comes in 8x4 foot pieces...

any way, ill be getting a male, and keeping in a 20gal long... i will plan on building a 4x2x2 for now, but at the expo i will talk to the breeder and see how big he/she thinks she will get depending on the parents..

Good luck with the RTB! Changing your mind after careful research can be a good thing. It means you're fully aware of the implications and the needs of the animal, and that you might be more ready at a different time. If anything I'd say it shows how responsible you are
Getting an albino bp for xmas to me sounds like the best part (but I'm biased towards bps ) Can't wait to see pics of all your new incoming snakes. Good luck with everything!

Re: Boa Info, I've Changed my mind...

Males don't get that big, generally, but females are a whole other story. Both sexes are *very* powerful constrictors, but females (like any other species of snake) are much larger. I've never had a female under 8 feet.

While most are really quite docile (depending on the subspecies), I wouldn't want to tangle with an angry Boa Constrictor - they're very strong and very dogmatic when they want to be, such as trying to stop them from getting into a tight spot once they've found one they want.

Might want to give some thought to a Rainbow Boa - they're excellent alternatives for those in areas where Boa Constrictors are prohibited, they're much more manageable than a large BC, and they still get a decent size at about 5 feet or more. I'm just thrown' it out there

Thanks for your input, however, i already have a BRB... and it has crossed my mind ALOT!!!!!!!!!!! to get another one, but i want a variety in my "collection". it is not out of the questions by far though to get another BRB but RTB has always caught my eye, (just like black bloods) and think i want to par take a RTB... i will for sure get a male, and all my snakes are very nice, but my BRB (long story) and my baby pastel BP, who is just a baby...

thanks again!!

Re: Boa Info, I've Changed my mind...

a 6x3 seems rather large, even for a 9 foot boa. I would think a 4x2 would be sufficient.

edit: directed at lady bug

as chuck said you did yourself proud mate

its ALWAYS better to change your mind BEFORE,rather than after you buy the snake in question

imo it shows you to be a responsible keeper

cheers shaun
