Unhappy something bit my dog on the nose

Well were off to the vet, my Rat terrier got into a fight with a 4lb muskrat!! she has a big slash on her snout that I think goes all the way through her nostril, as before I got the bleeding stopped, blood was blowing and bubbling out one nostril.

My hearts a thumpin right now!! send good thoughts Venninne's way, I hope it's nothing too serious. After talking to the vet he says it could be as little as stictches and anti-biotics, or it could be as bad as surgery if the puncture went through a sinus, or if the wound inside needs stitching, it would be local or general anesthetic.

I'll let you know how it went when we get back from the vets.

Best of luck man, those suckers have mean teeth, I had one bite clean through the leather on my steel-toed boots and scrape the metal when I was doing animal relocation.

Re: something bit my dog on the nose

Alright, we're back!!

Thank you everyone for your concern and best wishes!! It's always nice to know people who care.

The puncture did go through the fleshy part of the nostril, but did not hit any of the bony parts, some of the cartelige is ripped, and there's a 1/2" tear on the top of her nose (right where black nose meets hair) as well as a small cut under her right nostril.

The vet cleaned it out and decided that (at this time) no surgery is needed. He did not even put in stitches as the cut had already started to close itself via scabbing and he sais IF this abcesses, we WANT the pus to come out the top, rather than inside her nose where it has access to her lungs and won't be seen right away. So he gave her a couple of shots for anti-biotic, pain relief and anti-inflamatory and sent me home with a course of oral anti-biotics.

Venninne is sleeping at my feet right now, she is quite the trooper, not complaining through my stopping the bleeding with direct pressure, the vet cleaning it out then stopping the bleeding again, giving her shots and basically poking and prodding her..........

She's my brave gal!!

Re: something bit my dog on the nose

Oh That is wonderful news. Abscesses are nasty business and I pray she doesn't get one. My Evie had one when I got her and it was horrid having to drain it every day. *Gags*

Re: something bit my dog on the nose

Thanks, both of you!!

Yes, we're really hoping for no abcess, it's just in a really bad place for that to happen and any draining would have to be done at the vets under anesthetic so none of the puss ends up in her lungs.
