Gecko Colony Questions

Hello All,

I have a question, when I move into my house I plan on building a large (maybe 6-7' x 4'x 4' I would be willing to make it bigger if need be) Gecko Colony with climbing perches and different heat and basking spots and lots of vertical space for climbing and suitable hides I've been wanting to do this for a while now and haven't had the space, now that I will I want to make it awesome (lol)

my question is can I mix species of similar sized Geckos provided their husbandry was the same or on a gradient? and they were all climbing varieties? (I'm willing to stick with one variety I was just curious)

I don't have any advice for you but a huge gecko enclosure with lots of cute gecko sounds awesome

Re: Gecko Colony Questions

Pretty sure even if they were similar sized with similar requirement they might fight amongst themselves but i'm not sure, I know they are fine being together when the same species but i've never seen or heard of anyone housing multiple species together and I doubt it is very common in the wild.

Re: Gecko Colony Questions

Yea I was worried about the aggression too I had considered getting them all as babies and raising them together the last expo and Geckos EVERYWHERE I like the different colour varieties

I also thought about getting an arboreal species and a terrestrial species and separating them with a partition like a screen that was strong enough to hold up the Gecko and fine enough that air can pass through but debris would not (like poop)

I realize this is entirely idealistic... but its a thought experiment its allowed to be ideal

Re: Gecko Colony Questions

I would think that you would be best sticking to one kind of gecko although I can't say for sure. With an enclosure that large you might be able to get away with 2 kinds but I wouldn't push my luck with more than that. I will add in that once you build this pictures are a must!

Re: Gecko Colony Questions

Does it need to be geckos? Lots of lizards co-habilitate well and have diverse coloration... anoles for example. (Cuban curly tails are fantastic and live well in groups but are terrestrial, though they do climb to reach better heat spots)

Re: Gecko Colony Questions

This is all in the hypothetical stages I would like another colonial tank I could even raise some lacerta offspring from my pair and put another female or 2 in there and build a larger Lacerta Habitat and make their 55 gal into a Gecko tank using 1 type of Gecko Of course or anoles... the great thing about geckos is that they are readily available the last show I was at had tons of them for 20 dollars or 30 dollars each
