Need help,i have an impacted monitor
I was wondering if any one can give me some help,I have a savannah monitor who is impacted. He hasn't gone to the bathroom for about a month now.I've called all the vets in my area and it seems nobody can help me without seeing him.The problem is that the average price they quote me is around $300,and I really don't have the money right now.I know you shouldn't oun animals without being able to take care of them properly but I was recently laid-off so money is very tight. If any one can give me some advice on what to give him and how I would go about giving him an enima It would be greatly appreciated ,as I hate seeing him like this.PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where in ottawa do you live, If its not too far from downtown I could always swing by and give you a hand. You can message me on ssnakess or on facebook. It shouldn't be hard to fix unless its super bad.

Re: Need help,i have an impacted monitor
What are the temps and humidity in the tank. Sav's shouldn't have a problem with impaction if the temps are correct. More info can help, temps, tanks size, substrate, food...

Re: Need help,i have an impacted monitor
I forgot to mention that I have been giving him warm baths daily and it hasn't helped. The tank conditions are roughly 100-110 degrees on the warm side,80 degrees on the cool side ,humidity 55-65%. I'm using peatmoss for his substrate. His tank is 4x2,the lizard himself is roughly 2ft. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Need help,i have an impacted monitor
You need to fix the hunbandry for your monitor asap. Read The Savannah Monitor, Varanus exanthematicus and make the changes to the cage. Having the correct husbandry is crucial to the overall health and without having the proper conditions for the animal you will continue to have health issues.

I have to agree, the temps are too low, they like to dig... and it should be eating crustaceans, mollusks, worms and insects.

Re: Need help,i have an impacted monitor
It may sound really silly but my beardie was really impacted and the baths weren't really working so I increased the water temp by a couple degrees (nothing too hot or dangerous just a touch like 3 degrees maybe) and while he was in the bath I had my hand under him and I gently massaged his belly. After a couple days of that he pooped BIG time and we have had no problems since

Thanks for your input,I'm giving him a warm bath daily, incresed the temps in his enclosure, changed his substrate so hopefully things will begin to move.

Re: Need help,i have an impacted monitor
His monitor should be fine now, he couldn't get another lamp so we moved the location of the lamp and that brought up the temps in the hot end by about 15 degrees and the monitor perked up, warm baths and a change in diet will be solved tomorrow when I make a delivery to his place
