getting heat right for corn snake baby

just in the last phase of setting up the enclosure, I am hoping to go get my baby corn either tomorrow or weds.

So what temp is the hot side and the cold side supposed to be at for a corn, there is an UTH and a basking light with a basking spot under it that is off the ground, then the cold side is closer to the window that the hot side.

Re: getting heat right for corn snake baby

alright, one more thing. I am taking the temp @hot end by pointing the temp gun at the opening of the cave. There is about 1.5" of aspen shavings on bottom of tank in that area, so the reading of 86(ish) is being read on top of the shavings.

So do Corn snakes dig/burrow? And if so will the UTH burn them if they sit on the heated glass?

I pointed the heat gun at the glass on top of the UTH and it read 100f, is that going to burn my snake if he burrows down to the glass?

Yes they burrow, mine is always making tunnels in the aspen. I would drop down the UTH so that the temp right on the glass reads 86-87. If he needs/wants the heat he will burrow down to the glass and get it. 100 is far to hot.

My thought would be yes it would - corns (especially young ones) do burrow a lot. I dont use UTH so think it would be best if someone that does advises you on the best way to set it up.

Re: getting heat right for corn snake baby

I was thinking if he burrows that would be too hot. I'm thinking about the same as you. I hope others with UTH's can let me know how to set the temp properly before this evening. As long as breeder is available, I'd like to pick him up tonight.

Re: getting heat right for corn snake baby

I have always used a UTH with a thermostat. I have the thermostat set to 88 and the glass stays at 87. The temp in Ivan's viv has always been spot on. His hot side on top of his aspen is 83-85 depending how cool the house is and his cool side is 73-76. In the winter months I do have to add a small heat lamp to the hot side but thats only because I let my house get down to about 60. Another thing I did was I covered 3 sides of the tank to help it retain heat and also make my snake feel more secure. (10gallon fish tank) Once he gets bigger I am going to build a wooden one. So If you are using a fish tank I would highly recommend covering the back and sides with something.

Awsome!! Sorry Gungirl, somehow I missed your first post!! I will adjust my temps accordingly. When you say the top of the aspen was 83-85, how thick is your aspen bed (approx)

And what sort of material would I be covering the 3 sides with? Something that reflects, or something that insulates?

Re: getting heat right for corn snake baby

My aspen is about 2-3" thick and I covered the sides and back with some left over fabric that I had. It was kinda like towel material. (but looks like tree's )

Re: getting heat right for corn snake baby

Wow, I feel a little bit like an idiot now!! All this time I have been desperately trying to bring down the heat on the UTH and I thought I'd have to go buy more equipment come payday. However one of my customers came to pick up some food for his snakes and I asked him to help me out getting the heat right.

He walked up to the viv and turned off the basking light!!!! (DUH) said not needed in summer where we live but he does use them to add some extra ambient heat in winter.

I am sure had I mentioned the basking light here, you all would have said the same thing, but alas, I am a very SINGLE MINDED individual and I was having problems with the UTH, not the light LMAO!!

So temps came down to good levels and by about 8 last night our little boy got to explore his new home!! And he SEEMS very curious.

Re: getting heat right for corn snake baby

So what is the temp reading on top of the UTH under the sub-straight now?

the glass directly over the UTH is reading at 86f, on top of the substrate is reading 82f and the cold side is reading 74f.

me too! He seems happy enough in there, not staying on any side of the tank, just cruising around, then hiding (repeat over and over) LOL
