Some Jamaican boa pics

Had some free time this evening, what better way to spend it than taking snake pictures?!

First up is Cornelius...

Next is Jamba, red/orange phase. Pics didn't come out so well since she was curled up in the pot.

Thanks for looking,
Ed

Re: Some Jamaican boa pics

Thanks all.

There are a few breeders in the US, but since E. subflavus are endangered, you're pretty much out of luck if you don't live in the same state as the breeder. I know of one in North Carolina and a couple in Florida, and possibly in Tennessee and/or Ohio.

Jamaicans will grow to 6' to 8' long, from what I've heard. They are notorious for musking, especially when young. My male (about 2.5 years old) has not musked me, although I got him when he was about a year old. My 1.5 year old female (which I got when she was only a few months old) still musks me when I bother her. I try to handle them regularly (especially the musker) in hope that handling them will make them less prone to musk. It's not that bad now, but I don't want a 7' snake dumping stinky atomic waste on my every time I take her out of the cage! Nasty. Other than that, they are a little flighty, but not bad. The female never bites, the other one only attempted to bite two or three times. (Got me in the face once, so he has a good batting average.)

Oh, no need to apologize for having questions, that's what forums are for!

Thanks,
Ed

Re: Some Jamaican boa pics

A lot of snakes musk, and a lot of times the snake can be calmed down. Milksnakes are notorious for it, but a lot of them get over it in time. I would still keep a Jamaican boa...even if I got musked every day..it's just so beautiful!

Thanks! I love taking close ups of the snakes' heads, if that's not already obvious.

Kimberly, I forgot to mention that there are other insular Epicrates that are easier to get, assuming that is something that interests you. Some are not as nicely colored as Jamaicans, but some are nice in their own right. I would love to get a Dominican red mountain boa, but prices are too high for my blood. Then again, I'd love to get every species/sub-species of these insular Epicrates.

Re: Some Jamaican boa pics

Its the head scales that caught my eye too.. They look quite slender though, do they stay that way?
