scared BP?

Hey all, as you know, Jasper, my baby pastel was very strike-ish at me ... well now he will maybe stirke at me 1 time, then i pick him up and hes fine... but you can tell hes still "scared" of me.. as i hold him, he will stay in a ball for a good amount of time... but eventually he will start to crawl through my hands and i let him crawl on the floor.. when i pick him up off the floor, no striking, no defensive gestures at all so my thing is this...

what are some tips to help him see me as not a threat.. i do understand now that he is NOT aggressive... hes scared, how can i have him "trust"me so he knows im not going to hurt him, is there any tips????

THIS IS HOW HE 1ST SITS ON THE FLOOR WHEN I GET HIM OUT.. ALL "BALLED" UP After a good 10 min. or so he will crawl around and through my hands?

thanks for all the help in advance!

Re: scared BP?

Time and continued patience. That's all you can do, just continue being gentle, he'll come around eventually

Re: scared BP?

when i first got mine he used to wheeze because he was so stressed from being handled. i made sure to hold him a few times a week but only for like 5-10 minutes. sometime's he would wheeze and freak out but i'd always wait for him to calm down then i'd put him back in his viv so he would stop seeing me as a threat. he's SO MUCH better now. i havn't heard him wheeze in months.

sometime's when he doesn't really want to be handled he will stay balled up after i put him down onto the bed or something. other times i put him down and he's immediately cruising.

Re: scared BP?

That pretty much sounds like more, but no wheezing, mines getting better, but very slowly.

Re: scared BP?

We have had our bp for about ten months now and he still comes out the viv in a tight ball, some days a few seconds pass and he is off, or other nights he stays balled up, tho his brathing does calm down a lot.

Re: scared BP?

This is the little guy that nommed on you huh? haha. He's adorable the way he's looking up at the camera in the second pic it just looks like he doesn't even.

I unfortunately cannot give you any advice, as I am fighting this same noble battle myself, but I do wish you luck with Jasper. Koehik acts very much the same way when I try to handle him, puffing up and staying in his little ball for a good 20 minutes. Then he'll come out and maybe explore a little lol.

Re: scared BP?

Are you sure you're not confusing fear with stress?
HUGE difference, with vastly different effects to the snake.

You can always shrink yourself down to 10 inches tall, I don't think he would consider you a predator at that size. Careful how much you decide to shrink though, there is a veeery fine line size-wise between predator adn prey.

The only other option I can think of is just to give him time to get big and realize that there are no predators in his life. That doesn't mean handling him every opportunity you get, it means let it happen...
