Hey Everybody

So i just picked up a Coastal carpet from a reptile show. I am a first time snake owner but have done a lot of reading and feel ready to tackle this 20-30 year adventure! My baby girl is about 3 feet 2 inches long. The vendor said she was about 18 months old. Does this sound accurate to you guys? I look forward to learning from all of you! Thanks.

Hey there, size sounds about right, coastals are the largest of the carpets from memory so you can expect a nine footer full grown. Lots of carpet fans on here so any qiestions just let us know. Importantly imo is to let you snake settle for a week and then the next most important thing is to make sure it eats before handling it. Once fed, and left for forty eight hours minimum, the NEXT most important thing is to post some pictures!!!

So i should resist handling her for a week, feed, resist two more days, then can begin regular handling!?!? if so, that is going to be hard to resist

I happen to just be handling her before i read that, and she nipped at my hand. I didn't actually feel any teeth tho, more a bump of her nose. Is that the worst i can expect?

Hello and welcome! Congrats on the new snake. You have to becareful Carpet python are addictive. It's hard to just get one. Before you know it you'll want another and another. lol

even if she doesnt bit while ur handeling her right after she "moved" from her old home she will be very stressed. so the best is realy to let her explore her enclosure get comfy and then fill her belly

after that u can handler her but for short periods of time and increas handling time gradually. This is what ive read in a few forums and articles about other snakes.. my guess is its the same for carpets. Lots of CP owners here im sure they will correct me if im wrong

I know its hard to leave them but when you think about it you ahve 20+ years to enjoy the company of the snake, 10 days or so is nothing in reality!!

You will get bit a few times before he is happy with handling, our Jungle took about 6 months to get to the point where he is "happy" to come out for cuddles.

Yea it makes sense to let her acclamate. I guess I got lucky when she "bit" me because upon further research it looks .like those fangs can be pretty nasty. I think she was jsut trying to tell me she was tired and wanted to chill. I love ehr already though her name is Nesta. It means pure, and is also Bob Marley's middle/native name. Yay snakes!

great snake you picked as your first carpets are hardy exciting snakes to keep

i personally wait until they are eating regular before i attempt to calm them down with handling

i wait until they have ate 3 or 4 feeds in a row

i also leave all my snakes 3 days after feeding before handling just to make sure their foods digested properly
