bp switching to rat pups

like i figured, my bp happily grabbed a rat pup instead of a mouse. it was pretty sad to see the rats i bred being killed, but that's the circle of life i guess. interesting that i hear of so many bp's being such finicky eaters and he just eats like a champ.

Re: bp switching to rat pups

3 of my BPs are finicky eaters...if you have enough of them, you are likely to have at least one finicky eater. And the finicky-ness may not manifest for a few months...

Re: bp switching to rat pups

My bp only took rats for like 2 years, could never get him to eat mice if i was low on rats, but he did take a turtle once:P (ate my cousins pet out of her hand)

Why do I suddenly have the desire to see this?

Poor turtle but the mechanics of how your guy managed it scream must see.

Re: bp switching to rat pups

funny

i figured the snake would want 2 rat pups because last time he ate he had 2 mice, but i dropped a 2nd one in the box after he was done and he wanted nothing to do with it. i guess one pup was a good enough meal for this week.

Re: bp switching to rat pups

Rats are more filling tahn mice - heavier in the protein stakes. Our BP would be out looking for food after a few days when on Mice, now he is on rats he eats and we dont see him for 14 days or so.

Re: bp switching to rat pups

Most ball pythons will eat what you feed them.
I have well over 100; not a single mouse eater and only three live eaters in the bunch.

Other than the issue with swallowing something as uncompressable as a turtle shell, once it's in the stomach it's not any more difficult to digest than a rat in terms of the processes involved . Same general building blocks to a turtle in terms of raw materials.

Unfortunate for the turtle though.

Re: bp switching to rat pups

i just fed off the 2nd rat pup. it's sad to see the rats dieing
it's hard to love animals so much and to feed them to each other lol.

stupid python lol. it took it like 5 minutes to finally find the head and get it in its mouth to start eating.
was just gnawing the rat all over to try and find the head lol.
