Rescued Pitbull!

So, it's not herp related but, I wanted to share.

So, my mother was driving and saw this pitbull in the middle of an intersection, people swirving and honking to avoid hitting the poor thing, so she managed to get the big fella in the car and bring him home. Gorgeous boy, big goofy dog.

He obviously belongs to someone, he looks really well fed and he -really- wants inside. I'd let him inside but we've got other dogs and cats and we're not sure how he'd react.

I hope his family just lost him instead of dumped him and they find him. I'd really hate to see him go to the humane society. He's extremely friendly, but I'm not sure if he'd pass his adoption test or not. You just don't know. Plus, someone could show interest but have hidden intents in adopting him out(fighting, etc.). I know how hard it is to get a pitbull adopted, and how many there are because of the restrictions on them(no children under 12, big fenced in yard, and some other rule...), and also because they've got such a bad wrap.

My pitbull, Zoey, was in the Humane Society for a year before we came along and adopted her. She came in at 6 months of age, and left at a year and a half.

If worse comes to worst.. I just hope he finds a good home. We'd love to keep him, but we've got so many on our hands as is.. doesn't mean I'm not going to try and win over mom, though... LOL I can try ;c

And in advance, sorry for my 'baby' babble. ;c

Well the Lexington Humane Society is a No-Kill humane society. The only killing they do is when an animal does not pass their adoption test(friendly to humans, friendly to other dogs, food aggression, etc.) and they are humanely euthanized should they not pass.

We have an old cage out back with a concrete slab flooring and I put him in it while I let Zo out for peepoops.

Something bad happened, though(no, none of them got hurt, just MY oopsy).

And yes, I know, it could have been a big oopsy, but I'm sooo relieved he's a good dog. So, I had Zo in the den(back door is in the den), and so I slipped out with Zeus' old collar(a pitbull we owned previously, we had to give him up for his own good. We're not the kind to just ditch an animal, it was very hard for us to let him go), and got it on the stray. Leashed him with Tahona's old leash(our old alaskan malamute/wolf mix who died of old age two years back) and started to lead him to the cage, and about halfway there, Zo pushed the back door open and came flying out.

Now I about crapped my pants right there, 'cause, you know, this stray may not of been ok with another dog, and it's a horrible mix when you've got two pitbulls and one or both are aggressive. I also had to get back to the door to shut it since all of our cats congregate in the den. So, the were both extremely excited and running around, fooling and whatnot, and when you've got two excited pitbulls running around you.. Let me tell ya, it's like getting battered all over the place. They're pure muscle. I managed to stumble to the door in a timely manner, but by that time the stray had slipped out of the leash.

Got the door shut, then spent about 3 - 5 minutes just trying to catch one of the two. Either catch the stray, leash and pull to the cage(or atleast tie the leash to something), or catch Zo and shove her back in. I leashed Zo and pushed her back into the door. Slipped in, got the leash and collar back, and finally got him into the cage.

So, that was a huge oopsy, but thank lord nothing horrible happened and he's a good boy.

She still did her business and had a blast to boot! Wagging tails the whole time with the cage gate between them, and on their front paws, rumps in the air.

Even if I can't convince my mother... I think he'd pass. It's just.. I don't know.. I got Zeus as a buddy for Zoey. She did have a little 'boyfriend' back in the Humane Society she loooved to play with, and I feel bad she doesn't have one of her kind, of her own strength to fool around with, you know?

When I got Riley, I actually wanted another pit bull... but mother fooled me into getting a toy breed, as she wanted. She didn't want another 'big' dog in the house(pitbulls are honestly 'mediums')... And I mean, Riley does 'play' with Zoey.. but Zoey can't run full force with him and all this because he's just a little dog and he can't take that kind of thing. She can't have as much fun as she wants to have. At best, she sits there and lets him jump all over her or just nudges him around. When you know a pitbull and how they play... You know that's not really play for them.

Edit: I deleted the video because it has no sound, so I reuploaded and it should have sound. Will post when it's done uploading.

Here it is!

Re: Rescued Pitbull!

Hmmm.
'No kill' Centres aren't as nice as they seem.
Even though most of them have the right intentions, I've never heard of one actually doing to well. They end up doing the animals a disservice... They become over populated, under staffed, with under qualified volenteers. Sickness spread in the crowd, animals can't get all the care and attention they need. Funds are a major issue. Etc...Just to list a few quick issues there. Your best bet, I'd say, is to look for a rescue group near you that is specifically for pitbulls and similar breeds. Call you vet and ask them to find one for you, they should be more than happy. And most rescues, if it's not close by, will be willing to meet you.
But maybe mom will have a change of heart. <3 As you probably already know they're probably one of the best breeds to own as a pet. <3 So loyal, so goofy, such sucks.
Here's a snap of my 7year old suck bandit, who still thinks he is a puppy.

Keep us updated!

Lexington Humane Society is funded by the city, I think, and has a 24/7 staff team that does clean up/feed/ water runs throughout the day. They bring every dog outside to do their business 5 - 9 times a day and keep them filled up on food and water. I visit regularly to browse what they've got.

I'm thinking mother won't have a change of heart... We've got 5 dogs, 9 cats, 3 lizards, 2 snakes, and 4 ferrets. She says we have enough on our hands without another 'horse' in the house. She plans on keeping him 3 days or so and seeing if anyone claims him, then taking him to the humane society.

We've brought him inside and have him in a large crate since it's so cold out.

He's such a sweety, so excitable, and so happy when he's with you, but mother doesn't like bigger dogs and my stepfather has they typical stereotyped view of pitbulls. As soon as mother drove up with him in the car and rolled down the window, he started up saying,"If this thing bites me I'm gonna--" and mother cut him off saying it wouldn't, but he hates pretty much all other pitbulls but mine. If we could keep him, I'd name him Lieutenant.~

Here's a pic of him. It's not too good since he kept moving :c

This is Zoey and our previous pitty, Zeus. I really miss Zeus :c Loved him to bits </3 but I'm really happy to know he's in a new, loving home.

Dude, I've seen full grown german shepherds that were quite sizable compared to a pitty. I mean HUGE german shepherds. I'd agree we couldn't house two of those, but two pits isn't too bad... but two pits and a little toy dog in a 12'x12' room may not be the best... I agree we don't really have enough space for another dog of that size.. but I really would like to keep him. I mean, at best, he could have the kitchen to himself and spend most of the day in the yard.

It's just, 7 - 9 cats stay in the den/living room. The rest of the house(upstairs hallways, downstairs foyer, and kitchen) is shared with three pugs, and my room is shared with my two dogs, 4 ferrets, and 2 snakes. The only rooms animals don't occupy is my parents' room and the spare bedroom(well.. two lizards are in there but they hardly take up any room compared to the room's size). They expect me to keep all of my animals in my room. They expect me to keep -everything- in my room. All I've got is my room, while they've got a whole house. I kinda wish I had more space... but I guess I don't have any right to use the spare bedroom even though absolutely NO ONE uses that room. Mother doesn't want anyone to use it 'cause she put alot into making it pretty.

Re: Rescued Pitbull!

Don't worry. ;/ I have the same problem.
When I got my new corn snake I wanted to quarantine her upstairs -just for a week or so to be safe- but nooo, in my room.
Granted, I have the basement to myself and it's a decent size...But snake tanks, and all the acessories to the side, and dog kennels, and a cat bed, and toys, and whatever else pet related takes up much room.
Who are we kidding? We don't have bedrooms - we have mini personal zoos. <3
Little annoying being 19, and still living under the parents rules, expecially when things aren't always agreeable. :P But it's my own fault - without all these pets I could of afforded to move out forever ago.

Oh - and on your comment about 'huge' g.shephards...My pittie is about 70lbs at full grown...Shys mom was 120lbs. ;p Shy is 3mns and is almost as tall as bandit, who is a stalkier pit, and her paws are huge compaired to his dainty poodle paws.

Oh wow. My pitbull is only around 55 - 60 lbs. She's a Staffordshire. This boy we've rescued feels a ton heavier though.

And ya, I feel ya on that one. My room IS a little zoo, I'll tell ya that much. I mean, I got a decent amount of floor room, but pretty much all my tabletops are taken up by tanks and other items... I mean, if I wanted more reptiles, I could clean off some things and place them in my closet or something, but I don't have the money to be buying new pets. And I'd be ALOT closer to moving out if I hadn't spent all the money I have(but I blew it on video games, toys, etc. growing up). My grandmother still gives me a weekly allowance of $20. If I'd saved up from when it all started, I'd have.. At least $11,520. When I think about it that way, it makes me pretty annoyed... but come on, what kid is going to act like a responsible -adult- and save all their money? Only the ones where their parents force them to save their money and not spend it. I spend my allowance because it's not important to me. I didn't earn it, so I don't feel it's special. When I earn it, then I'll care enough to save it. I'll probably end up keeping it, though, when I get a job. It's like an extra $80 paycheck each month

Also, we've supposedly found the owner. They'll be coming over later today, but, ofcourse, we'll be asking questions, first. We don't want a pitbull to get into the wrong hands. He's too sweet of a boy to be treated wrong. ;c

Re: Rescued Pitbull!

Glad to hear you hopefully found the owner!
Best question to ask would be a vaacine sheet or just to call their vet and check. If they ever have brought the dog in you will be able to just phone and ask for confirmation that they own a dog that matches this ones description.
Again, it's probably different for you, but in my area there is a BSL and any pits need to be neutered, and up to date on vaccines to be considered 'legal'.
Sounds like your headed toward a happy ending though

I don't think there's BSL here, but any animal that goes through the humane society(and most rescue groups) are spayed/neutered and you're encouraged to do this for all of your pets. We even have a small clinic that takes in strays and ferals to spay/neuter them, $25 per.

And I hadn't thought about that, I'll be sure to run that by with my mother to ask the person when they arrive. Hopefully they've visited the vet or, at least, had the boy chipped. He doesn't appear to be neutered, though. I'm planning on asking if they plan to. I really don't want people to be breeding pitbulls, even if they supposedly have friends that will take them. There's enough pitbulls, and thousands upon thousands dumped, homeless, and killed. Breeding them only contributes to the problem at this point in time. He's a great boy, very friendly, affectionate personality, and I'm sure he'd make great, loving little puppies when raised in a loving, caring family... but some people are just monsters and toss an animal out the door when they do something wrong. They're -animals-. They don't know any better and it's -your- job as a responsible owner to teach them this is -wrong-. It's even worse when a pit is dumped on the streets or at a shelter or humane society. There's enough there, already, and most of them are having problems finding a good home.

On another note, my stepfather really angers me sometimes. He came home and ran into me, told me the guy would be coming later to pick the dog up and I said(I'm just putting this in list format. M for Me, S for Stepfather):

M: Well, yes, but I'll be asking some questions first.
S: Questions? Why? It's a dog, and he says it's his.
M: Well mom wanted to ask questions before handing the dog over, too.
S: It's a dog. Who cares.
M: ... It's a -pitbull- and you know there's bad people out there, people that--
S: All I care about is R E W A R D. I want a REWARD.
M: ... That's greedy.
S: We kept the dog in our house, I expect a damn reward.
M: Greedy.
S: Ha! Greedy?! -You- talking about greedy?
M: YES. At least -I- do not expect money for doing a kind favor and helping someone's dog.
(A few seconds pass)
S: ... I was just kidding!
M: Mmhmm.. Sure. You only say that because you know I'm right.

He's such an idiot... Some people are just plain old despicable, only taking in a dog in hopes that you get cash for it. -Feh-.

Maybe he just had a rough day, who knows.
Hopefully the fact that your mom agrees about a quick check should help. No need to go twenty questions, expecially if they're comfortable iving up vet info. Can't really tell from the pictures (and my internet so aweful videos wont work) but it does sort of look like his not nuetered. Lol, In person it won't be hard to tell, he'll either have them, or he'll have where they used to be. lol.
No matter how things end up, you did the best you could.

Oh he has 'em. It's plain to see. We have a boy that went un-neutered for 3 or so years and he got neutered a few years back, so I definitely know the difference and this big boy isn't.

And I really doubt he had a bad day. If anything he was probably at the doctor's, again, getting more medication. :l He just doesn't like any animals besides his fat-headed, bug eyed a**hat of a dog and he hates all other pitbulls but mine. He -tolerates- mine, but doesn't love her.
