Profile: Lancelot

Last week I profiled Galahad. This week I’ll profile his brother, Lancelot. Lancelot is an August 2009 male who was the other of the two top male picks from a strong breeding trio. While not a breeder holdback, his intense babyhood color he struck me even more than Galahad did. Lancelot is one of a total of four males that Living Gems acquired that year, only two of which we expect to keep in the end. As of month end December, Lancelot had just crested 500 grams, and had reached a large enough girth to jump to small rats.

Since then, his orange has developed into a soft warm glow, although one not easily captured by my aging lens. Here he is as of October 2010, at 14 months old.

I like reading the history of your snakes, and it's nice to see that you are not power feeding them up to breeding weight. As always, great pics and thanks for sharing. I can't wait for our reptile show in march, I will definitely be eyeballing some rainbows!

@ Greg: I agree, I dislike the whole idea of power feeding. I'd rather take it slow, get it right, and add another ten years to the animal's life. I'm also a huge believer in buying *babies* as possible breeders. That way I'm not breeding someone else's castoffs, and I know the animal's entire health history, thus ensuring good quality for my customers.

@ Chuck: yes, he does have some nice orange :-), and I'm crossing my fingers it will intensify again as he ages -- his baby orange was stunningly vivid.

Reptile shows: go for it, but be careful. As Brazilians are one of the more uncommon snakes, I generally find superior specimens, greater expertise, better customer service, and less disease risk in buying on-line from specialized breeders. Doesn't mean it *can't* happen at a show, but I've seen too many brown babies....
