co2 chamber
i just started breeding rats and the adults are very hard to kill with a pencil and pulled tail method. juss wondering how can i make a homemade co2 chamber. i was told by someone at my local pet shop that you can take the co2 canisters from a paintball gun, put the rats in a sealed container and fill with co2. what are your ideas? thanks in advance.!

Re: co2 chamber
If you go to a cooking supply store you can get a whipped cream whipper, or seltzer bottle. They also sell boxes of CO2 chargers (they're for seltzer, but they'll work in either.). I pull the rats I need to kill, drop em into a bag, fill it with co2, and seal it. Dead rats in 30 seconds. It's especially good for killing large numbers of pinks humanely.

C02 is not poison, we exhale it, trees take it in, Soda pop is charged with it, so is beer.
What gassing with C02 does is deprive the brains of oxygen.
All mass frozen orders from rodent suppliers are gassed with C02.
Oddly, Carbon dioxide IS oxygen..Bonded with carbon.
It's that carbon atom that makes the Oxygen impossible for organisms other than plants, algae and certain bacteria to absorb it.

Re: co2 chamber
i dont kill my own rodents but ive heard of people just putting them in the freezer alive and i guess they go into hibernation and then die but idk? but we used to put dowwn chickens by hitting them in the soft spot on thier head ( all birds and mammals have one) with a large alen wrench type thing it was more humane the head chopping and they dont run. i have also heard of putting a pin through the soft spot and movin it around or injecting water into its brain. bu this is something idk if i could do. but like i said i get mine and they are already frozen

Re: co2 chamber
Putting a mammal into the freezer to kill it is not quick, or humane. It works on reptiles because they're cold blooded. A warm blooded animal is going to struggle to stay warm for a very long time.

Re: co2 chamber
My recommendation is Dry ice, its perfect, get a water bottle grind the stuff up, put a plexiglass lid with 3 holes in it, one large enough for some piping to run into the water bottle, and two smaller ones for ventilation that fits your chamber( I recommend a ten gallon) keep some water on hand to pour on the dry ice to get the most out of it.

Re: co2 chamber
Dry Ice is great if you're doing large batches, but it's cost prohibitive if you're just doing one rat a week or so. It can also be hard to find. All of the places around here stopped selling it when people started making bottle bombs =(

Re: co2 chamber
If I have to kill just one rat, I set it down on the table, and press a honing steel (the rough metal cylinder that knife sets come with, used to keep knives sharp) down between its head and shoulders until I feel the crunch. Breaks cervical vertebrae, instant death. Not as fast as the old "whack it against the table" routine, but a lot more definite and cleaner.
