There's this 55 gallon tank for sale but...
has anyone ever figured out a snake-proof lid/top for the run of the mill trimmed aquarium?

Re: There's this 55 gallon tank for sale but...
I know what he means.. I have 3 55 gallons that I use for snakes.
Let me look up where I bought the one cover.
for the others I cut a sheet of plywood to make a cover.
Its easy to do, then you just drill a few small air holes in it.
Four Paws Pet Products Heavy Duty Screen Cover 36 Inch - eBay (item 140465905070 end time Dec-13-10 11:41:58 PST)
use clips or set something heavy on it.

Just a thought, but if you could buy, or make a sliding screen cover you could lay the aquarium on it's side for more floor space.

Re: There's this 55 gallon tank for sale but...
they are not constructed to take the pressures like that.
The first time anything came into contact with the side facing up, it would break the glass.
I have shattered enough vivariums just cleaning them to know.

Re: There's this 55 gallon tank for sale but...
Our 55 gallon has a home made top made from 2x4 on the sides and top of all 4 sides with mesh sandwiched between them. The weight of the 2x4 is not the only aspect keeping the snake in, the top is made fairly tight, so even if she gets strong enough to push up the top it will wedge in place. For us to open it both of us have to lift the lid evenly, one on each side.

Re: There's this 55 gallon tank for sale but...
Thanks, guys. I think a 1/2" plywood board fitted to the tank and some of the clips I saw from Marvelfreak's link would do the trick.
First, measure the aquarium trim and buy the right clips...
