Mites

So there's a lot of talk about ways to get rid of mites etc but I still have some questions.....

How do you get rid of your mites?

What's the fastest way to get rid of mites?

WHERE DO THEY COME FROM?

I keep my snakes cages pretty clean. Spot clean when I need to and a complete clean about every 3-4 months....

My JCP is a juve and currently in a 20 gallon long (viv is in the process of being built), I use coco brick for her bedding, she has a ceramic water bowl, two hides (1 wooden, the other stone), and a large wooden climbing structure with fake leaves....

What do you think the fastest way for me to disinfect her enclosure and accessories?

I took all her items out of her cage and soaking them in bleach and really really hot water. Sprayed her down with the mite spray and let her bathe in water and a spray of that stuff for about 10 minutes while I wiped down her cage (I sprayed her cage completely down with the mite spray not missing one spot). I put in new bedding and an extra wooden hide and log set up for her to perch on and a small dish of water. Im gonna let her items soak for about an hour and then let them sit out to dry for 24.

To me this seems like a lot of work and that I don't need to take everything to this extreme cleaning level. But I HATE mites and feel like if I don't take it to this level of cleaning I wont get rid of them......

What can I do differently that would speed up this cleaning process?

Am I missing anything?

and again, Where do they come from?

Re: Mites

best way to kill mites imo is

provent a mite (buy it on line)

use once mites dead its that simple

always worked first time everytime for me

you can pick up mites from being in pet stores or being near someone elses collection or handling other snakes that already have mites.

mite eggs are tiny and can be easily picked up on your clothes

all you do with provent a mite is

take everything out the vivarium

spray the inside of vivarium

spray all the stuff you took out the vivarium

DO NOT SPRAY THE WATER BOWL wash that with hot soapy water

leave everything for 2 hours then put it all back into vivarium

while doing all this keep the snake in a SEPERATE ROOM

DO NOT SPRAY THE SNAKE

only put snake back in vivarium 2 hours after treating the vivarium and all its contents with the exception of the water bowl.remove that and wash seperatley somewhere else in the house.

cheers shaun

Re: Mites

Mites and snakes, a fact of life we all deal with.

One trip to a pet store that has mites running around, and they will "follow you home"

I make sure I wash my hands with lots of soap, and usually since it's so hot in our reptile room, I am in shorts, so they don't ride on my clothes either.

Re: Mites

A cheaper alternative to provent a mite is equate bedding spray from walmart ( $4.00). It has the same exact percentage of the active ingredient.
