i need advice for my rescued python

hi.i would like some advice please.. a couple of weeks ago i rescued a snake from someone.. i instantly felt sorry for her the minute i saw her.. she is a 7 foot carpet python.. she was in a box of around 2 foot long with no heating, nothing at all.. when i went to collect her, the bloke had fed her a live rat about 10 minutes before i got to her.. i was discusted.. the rat had bitten her through the nose and tail.. i took her home and got her cleaned up and she is now in a lovely warm viv.. sadly last night, the end of her tail fell off.. as much as we tried to save it. we have noticed her body is covered with scars.. she has obviously ate live before and this man told me she ate live for the first time that day.. i know hes lying.we had to clean her mouth today as she had an infection.. her nose is slightly blocked with dried blood.. is there a way to help her unblock it? she opens her mouth alot.. im sad because she is such a lovely snake.. she is getting use to us now and knows shes loved.. she obviously has not had a life before.. also her skin is very dull and dark at the top of her body. we thought it was dirt but its not.. why is this do you think? she has no vibrance to her what so ever.. she is not due shedding as i know how my other snakes look when shedding.. her all round look is extremly dull.. i feel sick she has been mistreated.. i love her to bits and would like some advice please.. thankyou.

I would personally recommend a trip to the veterinarian as soon as you can.

Thankfully that snake has you now.

Yes, definitely get her to a vet ASAP. She most likely needs antibiotic therapy.

Re: i need advice for my rescued python

hello and welcome

as said you really need a vet on this one

i would also report the guy who had it to the relevant authoritys

carpets are very hardy snakes so this guy may pull through and lead a good life with you

let us all know how it goes

kudo's to you for rescuing this guy

cheers shaun

Re: i need advice for my rescued python

thanks again for advice.. the vet has advised i raise her humidity to help with releasing the blood in her nose.. should come out when she sheds aswell..she seems quite lively and her muscle power is strong... im very suprised she isnt aggressive after everything. i knew i was taking a risk when i took her because every snake this guy had was snappy.. even his baby snakes.but its worth the risk to try and better her life.. she has hissed alot but not attacked us.. my partner got badly bitten by this guys male carpet python.. i had to report him as the snakes were in a discusting inviroment.. they hadnt been cleaned out.. they were living in there poo.. and i overheard this guys brother telling someone that he had to BEAT one of the snakes!!! i think this snake i have has took some abuse because she was so nervous.. i have spent days with her cuddling her and being as gentle as i can to her and she seems to be coming along ok..people like this guy make me so sick!! the vet told me that she went to work the other week, she found a box with a burmese python just dumped.. the python had its face chewed away and half way up her body was chewed.. due to live feed.. this poor snake died just before they tried to operate.. how sad is that? i know everyone is different but i never have and never would feed my snakes live food.. im worried now because my carpet python obviously ate live and im hoping that she will take dead food. people tell me she will only take live food..but i cant stand the thought of putting her through what shes already had to deal with.. this poor snake is covered in scars, shes prob been through of pain. if anyone has advice on how to get her to eat pre-killed, please let me know.. thankyou all.

Re: i need advice for my rescued python

this is picture we took of her on the day we got her home.. its not clear but as you can see, we bandaged part of her face that was ripped.. that bandage actually sealed part of her face back in place.. it has since healed.. but sadly the front of her face is quite scared from previous attacks.. shes still beautiful..

Re: i need advice for my rescued python

i cant see the picture pal

if its hard packed blood up her nostrils then warm baths would aid it.it will soften the blood

if your carpet has open wounds though that are in the scabbing stage id wait for them to heal and drop off

i had a carpet with a piece of shed stuck up a nostril

warm baths for 2 weeks the the vet reverse flushed it out with a catheter

i hope you can post pics as id love to see this snake

i wish you all the best in getting it back to health

cheers shaun

when you "post reply" at the top with all the little icons is a paperclip - click on this and it takes you to an upload screen. alternatively i have started to use photobucket.com to host my photos - you can then just copy and paste the link to the picture into your post then and it works fine.
